Job Details

Job Posting Organization:
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that aims to promote social justice and fair labor practices globally. Established in 1919, the ILO has a mission to ensure that labor standards are upheld and that workers' rights are protected. The organization operates in over 180 countries and has a diverse workforce of approximately 3,300 employees. The ILO's work encompasses various areas including employment, social protection, rights at work, and social dialogue, making it a key player in the global labor landscape.

Job Overview:
The internship position at the ILO in Bangkok offers a unique opportunity for individuals to gain firsthand experience in international labor issues while contributing to the organization's mission. Interns will be involved in the Decent Work Team for East and South-East Asia and the Pacific, providing technical support to ILO Country Offices in the region. The internship is designed to enhance understanding of ILO principles and strategies, while also allowing interns to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting. Interns will work closely with the Regional Coordinator for Decent Work in Supply Chains, focusing on the implementation of the Priority Action Programme on Supply Chains in Asia and the Pacific. This role is not intended to lead to permanent employment within the ILO, and candidates should not expect further job opportunities following the internship.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be expected to engage in a variety of tasks that support the ILO's objectives in promoting decent work. Key responsibilities include assisting in the design and execution of high-level regional policy forums on trade, investment, and decent work. Interns will also learn about building partnerships with multilateral organizations, financial institutions, and donors. They will analyze best practices in labor regulation for supply chains, exploring innovative strategies and cross-country approaches. Additionally, interns will develop skills in planning and implementing development cooperation projects focused on supply chains at both national and regional levels. A portion of their time, approximately 10% to 20%, will be dedicated to administrative tasks to support the team.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet specific criteria to be eligible for the internship. They should have no close relatives serving in the ILO and this must be their first internship with the organization. The ILO values diversity and encourages applications from qualified individuals, particularly those with disabilities and from under-represented member states. Strong writing skills, adaptability to a multicultural environment, and good communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should be pursuing or have recently completed a graduate degree in law, political science, economics, public policy, or related fields. Candidates must be enrolled in their final year of study or have completed their degree no more than one year prior to applying for the internship. This educational background is crucial as it provides the necessary foundation for understanding the complexities of labor issues and the ILO's work.

Experience:
While prior work experience is not mandatory, candidates should possess knowledge of fundamental principles and rights at work, particularly regarding freedom of association and collective bargaining. Familiarity with trade and investment policies, as well as responsible business conduct and corporate due diligence in supply chains, is highly desirable. This knowledge will enable interns to contribute effectively to the ILO's initiatives and projects.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. Additionally, a working knowledge of at least one of the ILO's official languages, such as French or Spanish, is desirable. Proficiency in languages spoken in the Asia and Pacific region can also be beneficial, as it may enhance communication and collaboration with local stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
The internship is classified as an internship grade position, with a contract duration ranging from 3 to 6 months, starting on either the 1st or the 15th of a given month. Interns will receive a monthly stipend based on the cost of living in Bangkok, unless they are receiving funding from another institution. It is important to note that the ILO does not cover travel expenses to the duty station, and interns are responsible for their own insurance coverage during the internship. The ILO does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and applicants should be cautious of fraudulent communications.
