Job Overview:
The Climate Change Advisor will play a crucial role in leading climate change initiatives within the SOLKAS project, which aims to enhance the resilience of children, youth, and communities in the Solomon Islands against climate hazards. This position involves providing high-quality technical assistance and integrating child-centered climate change practices into national and provincial government frameworks. The advisor will work closely with various stakeholders, including government ministries, community organizations, and educational institutions, to ensure effective implementation of climate change strategies. The role requires a deep understanding of climate change programming, as well as the ability to communicate complex information clearly to diverse audiences. The advisor will also be responsible for developing training materials and supporting curriculum development related to climate change education.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Act as the primary advisor on all climate change-related aspects of the SOLKAS project, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with implementing partners and stakeholders.
- Provide technical leadership in the execution of climate change activities, ensuring alignment with Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Food Security & Livelihoods (FSL), and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives.
- Develop and curate climate change technical materials, including training programs and manuals, to enhance the capacity of stakeholders.
- Stay updated on the latest climate change information relevant to Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and utilize this knowledge to inform project interventions.
- Facilitate capacity-building initiatives for non-technical program staff to promote evidence-based climate change approaches.
- Engage in strategic planning and time management to ensure project milestones are met effectively.
- Represent Save the Children in discussions with stakeholders, advocating for children's rights and climate resilience initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience in climate change programming, including design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
- Familiarity with approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation, particularly in relation to Disaster Risk Reduction, Food Security, and WASH.
- Knowledge of the Green Climate Fund and other global climate finance mechanisms.
- Strong strategic planning, administrative, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present information clearly to various audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to build capacity among non-technical staff in climate change methodologies.
- Strong analytical skills to synthesize and process information on development and climate change issues.
Educational Background:
A relevant degree in environmental science, climate change, sustainability, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in climate change or environmental management are preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of experience in climate change programming or related fields is required. Experience working on environmental or climate-related projects in the Pacific context or Small Island Developing States is highly desirable.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages or dialects spoken in the Solomon Islands is considered an asset.
