Job Overview:
The Public Information Assistant/Tour Guide position is located in the Publications and Conference Management Section (PCMS) of the Publications, Conference and Knowledge Management Division (PCKMD). The primary function of this role is to serve as a public information assistant and tour guide at the Visitors’ Centre of the renovated Africa Hall. The individual in this position will be responsible for conducting informative and engaging tours that educate visitors about the history of Africa Hall and the work of the United Nations. This role requires the ability to present UN-related information clearly and professionally, ensuring that visitors have an enjoyable and educational experience while receiving excellent customer service. The position also involves staying informed about current UN activities and being able to respond to a variety of visitor inquiries, including those that may be politically sensitive.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Public Information Assistant/Tour Guide include conducting one-hour lecture tours multiple times a day, participating in daily and special briefings on topics such as peacekeeping and human rights, and researching UN materials to stay updated on current activities. The individual must handle questions from visitors with tact and diplomacy, tailoring information to suit different audiences, including children, students, and VIPs. Providing quality customer service is essential, as is the ability to manage stressful client-service situations effectively. The role also involves developing positive relationships with peers and supervisors, assisting with the dispatch of visitor groups, monitoring visited areas, and addressing crowd control issues as needed.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with a first-level university degree in communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations, or a related field being desirable. A minimum of five years of relevant work experience is required, which can be reduced to three years if the applicant holds a first-level degree or higher. An Ethiopian resident permit is also required for this position.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent. A first-level university degree or higher in a relevant field such as communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, or international relations is preferred, indicating a higher level of education and understanding of the subject matter.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of work experience in communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations, or a related field. However, if the applicant has a first-level degree or higher, the required experience is reduced to a minimum of three years. This experience is crucial for effectively engaging with visitors and providing accurate information about the UN and its activities.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the two working languages of the United Nations. Additionally, fluency in another UN official language such as French, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, or Arabic is desirable.
