Job Overview: The Environmental Engineer position is crucial for implementing the World Bank's environmental and social risk management policies in Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan. This role involves ensuring that all World Bank-supported investment projects adhere to high environmental, social, health, and safety standards. The engineer will be responsible for conducting due diligence on environmental and social risks, integrating these considerations into project design and implementation, and providing technical support to clients and counterparts. The position requires a proactive approach to managing risks and fostering collaboration across various teams within the World Bank Group to enhance the effectiveness of environmental and social frameworks.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Environmental Engineer will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including: conducting environmental and social risk management due diligence for World Bank-financed operations; preparing Environmental and Social Review Summaries (ESRSs) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs); ensuring compliance with World Bank Group EHS guidelines and IFC Performance Standards; guiding clients in the preparation of project documents such as Environmental and Social Commitment Plans (ESCPs) and Labor Management Procedures (LMP); supporting public consultation and disclosure procedures; providing guidance on specialized plans related to biodiversity, resource efficiency, and occupational health; assisting clients with incident management and root cause analysis; delivering capacity-building training on environmental risk management; and collaborating with other teams to integrate risk management into sectoral programs.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced degree (PhD or Master's) in engineering, specifically civil, chemical, environmental, or sanitary engineering, with a strong technical background in related fields such as occupational health and safety, solid waste management, and pollution prevention. A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in environmental management is required, particularly in managing risks associated with large infrastructure or industrial projects. Familiarity with the World Bank Group's Environmental and Social Framework and similar sustainability frameworks is essential, along with demonstrated project management skills and experience in capacity building for environmental risk management.
Educational Background: The position requires an advanced degree in engineering, specifically in civil, chemical, environmental, or sanitary engineering. Candidates should have received good technical training in related topics such as occupational health and safety, solid waste management, and pollution prevention and control, which are critical for effectively managing environmental risks in large-scale projects.

Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both oral and written. Proficiency in Amharic is also required, as it is essential for effective communication in the local context. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an advantage, particularly in enhancing collaboration with diverse stakeholders in the region.
