Job Overview:
The SOCS Research Officer position is integral to the MSF Speaking Out Case Studies (SOCS) project, which aims to critically analyze and document MSF's actions and decision-making processes during humanitarian emergencies. The role involves producing case studies that explore the dilemmas and controversies surrounding MSF's advocacy efforts. The SOCS project not only serves MSF members but also aims to educate a broader audience about the intersection of speaking out and humanitarian interventions. The officer will be responsible for conducting thorough research, interviews, and writing case study chapters, contributing to the overall mission of enhancing understanding of humanitarian issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The SOCS Research Officer will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including: researching internal documents and multimedia resources for the Speaking Out case studies; conducting interviews with relevant stakeholders; writing detailed chapters of the case studies in accordance with established methodological guidelines; reviewing layout proofs of the case studies in both English and French; fact-checking podcast scripts and learning materials derived from the case studies; and disseminating knowledge through presentations, debates, and webinars to engage both internal and external audiences.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the SOCS Research Officer position should possess strong research and analytical skills, with a demonstrated ability to synthesize complex information into coherent narratives. Proficiency in both English and French is essential, as the role involves producing materials in both languages. Additionally, candidates should have excellent writing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team. Familiarity with humanitarian issues and MSF's operational context will be advantageous.

Educational Background:
A relevant educational background is required for this position, ideally in fields such as social sciences, international relations, public health, or a related discipline. Candidates should have a strong foundation in research methodologies and be able to demonstrate their ability to conduct qualitative research effectively.

Experience:
The SOCS Research Officer should have prior experience in research, particularly in a humanitarian or academic context. Experience in writing case studies or similar documentation is highly desirable. Candidates should also have a proven track record of conducting interviews and working with diverse stakeholders to gather information and insights.

Languages:
Proficiency in English and French is mandatory for this position, as the SOCS project produces materials in both languages. Additional language skills may be considered an asset, particularly if they relate to the regions where MSF operates.

This position is a permanent contract at 100% capacity, with a start date set for January 202
  • The successful candidate will typically be offered a contract in the MSF office located in their country of residence at the time of application. Compensation and benefits will align with the package currently offered by the MSF entity establishing the contract.
