Job Overview:
The Environmental Health Officer is responsible for managing and coordinating environmental health activities within a designated area. This role involves data collection and analysis, conducting scientific assessments, and developing technical reports to inform health strategies. The officer will prepare environmental health reports, monitor water quality, and assess sanitary conditions at the household level. The position requires immediate reporting on any increases in water and sanitation-related diseases and contributing to the development of national policies for environmental health. The officer will also serve as a focal point for WHO environmental health activities, ensuring that technical guidelines are applied and coordinating actions among health authorities during emergencies. Additionally, the officer will manage training activities to strengthen capacities at various levels, ensuring that personnel are equipped to implement environmental health programs effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage data collection and analysis, including conducting scientific assessments and developing technical reports.
  • Prepare environmental health reports, including water quality tests and sanitary inspections.
  • Report on increases in water and sanitation-related diseases.
  • Contribute to the development of plans and strategies for environmental health activities.
  • Monitor and coordinate the implementation of planned activities, serving as a focal point for WHO environmental health activities.
  • Ensure technical guidelines are applied by WASH and health partners.
  • Coordinate actions among health authorities for disaster preparedness and response.
  • Provide technical advice for environmental health interventions, including water supply rehabilitation and waste management.
  • Organize and deliver training activities to strengthen capacities at various levels. 1
  • Assess the impact of training and capacity-building activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • First level university degree in environmental, civil, or sanitary engineering.
  • At least 2 years of experience in implementing emergency environmental health programs.
  • In-depth knowledge of public health program coordination.
  • Desirable: Experience in healthcare waste management and managing emergency environmental health responses during outbreaks.
  • Good knowledge of WHO procedures and policies.

Educational Background:
The position requires a first-level university degree in environmental, civil, or sanitary engineering. This educational background provides the necessary technical knowledge and skills to effectively manage environmental health programs and respond to public health challenges.

Experience:
Candidates must have at least 2 years of professional experience in implementing emergency environmental health programs. This experience should include coordination of public health initiatives and a strong understanding of environmental health practices. Desirable experience includes managing healthcare waste and responding to environmental health emergencies during outbreaks.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication with local and international partners, as well as for the preparation of reports and training materials.
