Job Posting Organization: MONUSCO, established in 1999 under the auspices of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), aims to support the Government of DRC in protecting civilians and stabilizing the region. The mission focuses on reducing threats from armed groups and violence against civilians, including sexual and gender-based violence. Job Overview: The UN Volunteer Translator/Interpreter will work under the supervision of the Head of Office of the SRSG, primarily focusing on translation and interpretation tasks. The role involves producing self-revised translations of various documents from French to English and vice versa, covering a wide range of subjects relevant to MONUSCO's operations. The volunteer will also provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation during high-level meetings, conduct terminology research, and contribute to the in-house terminology database. Additionally, the role includes mentoring and training national staff and partners, emphasizing capacity development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Produce self-revised translations from French to English and English to French of memos, speeches, reports, and other documents related to MONUSCO's work.
Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation at high-level meetings.
Conduct terminology research and identify new terminological material.
Actively contribute to the in-house terminology and reference database.
Mentor and train national staff and partners, focusing on capacity development through coaching and on-the-job training.
Ensure that all translations and interpretations are accurate and culturally appropriate.
Collaborate with other team members to ensure consistency in terminology and messaging.
Required Qualifications:
Proficiency in both French and English, with excellent translation and interpretation skills.
Strong understanding of political, military, legal, administrative, and technical terminology.
Experience in using computer-assisted translation and terminology software.
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
Educational Background: A degree in translation, interpretation, linguistics, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in translation or interpretation are advantageous.
Experience: A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in translation and interpretation is required, preferably in a UN or international organization context. Experience working in a multicultural environment is also beneficial.
Languages: Mandatory: Proficiency in French and English. Good to have: Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region or UN operations.
Additional Notes: This position is a family assignment based in Kinshasa. It is a support service role to the Office of the SRSG and does not involve direct humanitarian work with beneficiaries. The position may require flexibility in working hours to accommodate high-level meetings.
