The mission of ECWA is to stimulate economic activity in its member countries, strengthen cooperation among them, and promote sustainable development. The organization aims to support economic and social development in member countries, enhance interaction and cooperation, encourage the exchange of experiences and best practices, achieve regional integration, and raise global awareness of the circumstances and needs of its member countries. ECWA provides a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies, serves as a platform for congress and coordination, and acts as a home for expertise and knowledge, as well as an information observatory. Its activities are coordinated with various divisions and main offices of the United Nations, specialized agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Job Overview: The UN Volunteer will play a crucial role in supporting the delivery of key outputs for the Economic Commission for Western Asia (ECWA). This includes finalizing the 10th National Development Plan (NDP) Assessment by assisting in the final revisions and ensuring the timely completion of the mid-term assessment. The volunteer will also contribute to the upcoming XB Project with Oman by participating in a market study on the building sector, which involves research, data analysis, and drafting project outputs. Additionally, the volunteer will assist in preparing research deliverables for the team, ensuring that all outputs align with the team's objectives and maintain high quality.
Duties and Responsibilities: The UN Volunteer will be responsible for conducting in-depth research and analysis to support ongoing and planned XB projects, including the mid-term review of the 10th National Development Plan (NDP) and the market study for the building sector in Oman. Key responsibilities include gathering, evaluating, and processing data using appropriate tools and software, maintaining and updating databases for reliability and accuracy, and performing detailed research by integrating information from diverse sources to develop various documents such as background papers, technical reports, and publications. The volunteer will actively participate in meetings, provide comprehensive project updates, and integrate feedback to drive effective decision-making. Communication and collaboration with ESCWA departments, particularly CSS, will be essential to align outputs with goals. The volunteer will also support the creation of presentations, charts, and visual materials to effectively communicate insights and progress related to XB projects and other team activities. Furthermore, the volunteer will evaluate and verify the accuracy, clarity, and validity of data sets and maintain an organized body of electronic reference files for quick access to critical information. Additional tasks and ad hoc assignments may be requested by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess strong analytical and research skills, with a demonstrated ability to gather and evaluate data effectively. Proficiency in using data analysis tools and software is essential. The ideal candidate should also have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to facilitate collaboration and provide project updates. A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team are crucial. Familiarity with economic and social development issues in the Western Asia region will be an advantage.
Educational Background: A degree in economics, social sciences, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in economic development, public policy, or a related area will be considered an asset.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 1-2 years of relevant experience in research, data analysis, or project management, preferably within an international organization or a similar context. Experience working on economic development projects or in a UN environment will be highly regarded.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, while knowledge of Arabic or French would be considered an asset. Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the region may also be beneficial.
Additional Notes: This position is a volunteer role, and as such, it may not offer a salary but could provide valuable experience and networking opportunities within the UN system.
