In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:
> Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW)
> International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)
> Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI)
> United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
The main roles of UN Women are:
> To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms.
> To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society.
> To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

UN Women’s Pacific Multi-Country Office is based in Suva, Fiji, and works alongside nineteen other UN agencies in the region, focusing on four key program areas: Women’s Political Empowerment and Leadership, Women’s Economic Empowerment, Ending Violence against Women, and Gender and Protection in Humanitarian Action and Disaster Risk Reduction.
Job Overview:
The Senior Project Officer will play a crucial role in the Markets for Change (M4C) project, which aims to promote gender equality through the economic empowerment of women market vendors in the Pacific region. This position involves supporting project management and implementation at the national level, focusing on reporting, monitoring, partnerships, financial and human resource management, and knowledge building. The officer will work closely with various stakeholders, including government officials, market vendor associations, and civil society organizations, to ensure the successful execution of project activities and the achievement of project goals. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying areas for support and interventions, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with regional teams and partners.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the development and implementation of programme strategies for Markets for Change Solomon Islands, including providing inputs to project proposals and initiatives, and participating in regional meetings.
- Assist in the implementation and management of the M4C project by contributing to the annual workplan and budget, monitoring the submission of financial and narrative reports from implementing partners, and providing training on Results Based Management.
- Provide technical assistance and capacity development to project partners, maintaining relationships and facilitating training as needed.
- Monitor progress of project activities and finances, drafting reports on monitoring missions and programme results.
- Manage project finances and human resources, including budget monitoring and reporting.
- Build partnerships and contribute to resource mobilization strategies, preparing documentation for donor meetings and public events.
- Coordinate inter-agency activities to ensure a coherent presence for M4C in Solomon Islands.
- Develop advocacy and communication materials, organizing campaigns and knowledge products related to the project.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in development-related disciplines, including gender issues, public policy, or social sciences is highly required.
- A first-level University Degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
- Project/programme management certification (e.g., PMP®, PRINCE2®, MSP®) is an advantage.
- Strong analytical skills and knowledge of Results Based Management are essential.
- Ability to gather and interpret data, reach logical conclusions, and present findings effectively.
Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master’s Degree in a relevant field such as gender studies, public policy, social work, or other social sciences. A Bachelor’s Degree combined with two additional years of relevant experience may also be considered. Certification in project/programme management is a plus.
Experience:
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme formulation, implementation, coordination, monitoring, evaluation, and donor reporting is required for candidates with a Master’s Degree. For those with a Bachelor’s Degree, a minimum of four years of relevant experience is necessary. Experience in women’s economic empowerment, informal sector support, and familiarity with Pacific cultures, especially in the Solomon Islands, is highly desirable. Previous experience in the UN system and in facilitating workshops is also an asset.
Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in the Solomon Islands is considered an asset, enhancing communication with local stakeholders and partners.

The position is full-time and may involve working closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies and donors.
