The strategic objective of the Global
Malaria Programme (GMP) is to support Member States to adopt WHO's malaria-related technical recommendations, and to advance implementation of the Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030 (GTS). The major functions of the department as identified in the 2019 transformation process are: To play a leadership role in malaria, effectively supporting member states and rallying partners to reach Universal Health Coverage and achieve GTS goals and targets; To shape the research agenda and promote the generation of evidence to support global guidance for new tools and strategies to achieve impact; To develop ethical and evidence based global guidance on malaria with effective dissemination to support adoption and implementation by national malaria programmes; and To monitor and respond to global malaria trends and threats.The Elimination Team supports accelerated efforts towards elimination and attainment of malaria-free status in at least 10 countries by 2020, an additional 10 countries by 2025, and a total of 35 countries by 2030 and the prevention of re-establishment in all malaria-free countries.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The
Technical Officer, Elimination will: Support the development and implementation of high quality training for malaria elimination. Interface with WHO Collaborating Centres working on malaria elimination. Support a streamlined process to provide WHO certification to malaria-free countries. Provide
technical support for the management of the Strategic Advisory Group for malaria eradication. Provide support ongoing or planned regional or sub-regional elimination efforts. Support the process to develop guidance on what strategy to apply depending on country progress towards elimination, in
coordination with all technical units. Support the coordination of documentation and sharing across Regions of lessons learned, best practices and key achievements towards elimination. Provide support as requested by the Technical Officer, Elimination to selected countries close to elimination by helping them develop strategic plans to achieve elimination (e.g. GMS,
Central America, E8), in close coordination with Regional focal points. Perform all other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential: First university degree in medicine or medically relevant field.
Desirable: Post-graduate specialization in
public health. An advanced university degree (Masters level or above) in epidemiology or public health
Experience
Essential: A minimum of five years relevant technical experience working in the field of Malaria. At least three years of experience working in a malaria endemic countries and a demonstrated background in research on control and elimination of parasitic diseases; a track record of publications in peer reviewed journals. Demonstrated exposure at the international level.
Desirable: Experience in developing proposals and reporting to donors . Some experience working on malaria for WHO in an malaria elimination country.

REMUNERATION
WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 62,120 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4400 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
