Job Posting Organization:
The UNFPA country office in Djibouti operates in partnership with governments, other institutions, and civil society to implement its mandate. The organization is guided by two frameworks: the Programme of Action adopted at the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994 (ICPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNFPA focuses on three priority areas: sexual and reproductive health, human rights and gender equality, and population and development issues. The organization provides technical and financial support to the country in collecting, analyzing, and disseminating population data to enable effective and efficient decision-making.

Job Overview:
The UN Community Volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the UNFPA communication officer in Djibouti, coordinating daily with the UNFPA team deployed in Obock, and under the general supervision of the head of the UNFPA Djibouti office. The volunteer will be responsible for documenting the response to the influx of Yemeni refugees and producing communication materials for the community. This role combines two functions: documenting the response and making visible the results achieved with national partners, and producing communication materials with other UNFPA volunteers. The position requires a strong understanding of ethical principles and safety, especially in the context of gender-based violence (GBV).

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Production of photo and video content: Capture photos of UNFPA activities and partners, including the delivery of sexual and reproductive health products, dignity kits, outreach sessions, and field visits. Edit and retouch images, shoot short video sequences, and ensure compliance with UNFPA's graphic charter. Obtain necessary permissions for filming.
  • Field narratives and writing: Collect testimonies from midwives, health personnel, volunteers, and community leaders while respecting individuals' dignity. Write captions, short texts, and scripts in French, translating testimonies from Arabic, Afar, or Somali.
  • Digital platforms: Prepare content for UNFPA Djibouti's social media accounts, adapting each piece for the specific platform and audience.
  • Community communication: Design and produce multilingual information materials tailored for low literacy populations, including visuals, pictograms, and audio messages. Test these materials with community members and update them as service availability changes.
  • Ethics, consent, and archiving: Ensure informed consent is obtained and documented, anonymizing content as necessary. Maintain a photo and video archive with proper documentation.
  • Support visits: Assist in organizing field visits for donors, media, and delegations, ensuring ethical briefings and adherence to access rules. Responsibilities also include applying GBV guiding principles, respecting UN Volunteer conduct codes, and ensuring the inclusion of marginalized groups in service access.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates should possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and have experience in photography and videography. They should be able to work collaboratively in a team and have a good understanding of the ethical considerations surrounding GBV. Familiarity with social media platforms and content creation is essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate cultural sensitivity and the ability to engage with diverse communities.

Educational Background:
A background in communications, social sciences, public health, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have relevant training or coursework that supports their ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

Experience:
Candidates should have prior experience in community engagement, communication, or humanitarian work. Experience in a similar role, particularly in a context involving vulnerable populations, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the UN system and its operations is a plus.

Languages:
Fluency in French is mandatory, with proficiency in Arabic, Afar, or Somali being advantageous. The ability to communicate effectively with diverse community members is essential.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position with a monthly living allowance of DJF 118,533.3
