Job Overview: The Deputy ChiefEconomist position is a strategic leadership role within the IDB’s Research Department (RES). The individual in this role will be responsible for guiding the department's research agenda, ensuring alignment with the IDB Group’s Institutional Strategy (Impact+). The Deputy Chief Economist will serve as a principal advisor to the Chief Economist and Economic Counselor, overseeing the daily operations of the department and managing a team of skilled researchers. This position requires a strong focus on producing policy-relevant research that addresses macroeconomic and development challenges in the LAC region. The Deputy Chief Economist will also play a key role in advising on economic and development challenges, coordinating research efforts, and ensuring the department's contributions are impactful and aligned with the IDB's goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Deputy Chief Economist will have a wide range of responsibilities, including: providing strategic advice to the Chief Economist and Economic Counselor on economic and development challenges; serving as the second-in-command of RES and representing the department in various forums; managing the daily operations and human resources of RES; ensuring the department's research aligns with the IDB's strategic vision; overseeing the production and dissemination of high-quality research; coordinating the development of statistical databases; collaborating with external partners; leading an active research agenda; supervising and mentoring junior colleagues; and participating in the Knowledge Advisory Committee to guide knowledge initiatives within the IDB Group.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a distinguished record of relevant experience in economics, particularly within national or international organizations, academia, or the private sector. A strong background in macroeconomics and economic development is essential, along with proven expertise in policy and program issues. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strategic thinking, teamwork, and consensus-building skills, as well as the ability to manage diverse teams effectively. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required, along with a collaborative attitude and strong interpersonal skills.
Educational Background: A PhD in Economics or a related field is required for this position. This advanced degree should be complemented by a strong foundation in economic theory and practice, particularly as it relates to development issues in the LAC region.
Experience: Candidates should have extensive experience in economics, particularly in contexts relevant to the LAC region. This includes a proven track record of research and publications, as well as experience in leading and managing teams. The ability to navigate complex policy environments and contribute to high-level discussions on economic development is crucial.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory, while proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is highly desired. Additional knowledge of French is considered a plus, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders across the region.
Additional Notes: The position offers an international staff contract for an initial duration of 36 months, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement.
