Job Overview: The Associate position in the Children’s Rights Division at Human Rights Watch is a full-time role based in New York, focusing on providing essential administrative assistance and programmatic support to the team. The Children’s Rights Division addresses critical issues affecting children worldwide, including education, sexual and reproductive rights, the right to a healthy environment, technology, armed conflict, migration, and youth justice. The successful candidate will report directly to the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">executive director of the Children’s Rights Division and will collaborate with other staff members located in various locations, including outside the United States. The role requires the candidate to be within commuting distance of the New York office, with an expectation to work from the office 2-3 days per week or as needed. This position is integral to the smooth operation of the division and involves a variety of tasks that support the overall mission of HRW in advocating for children's rights.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:
Providing day-to-day administrative support to the Children’s Rights Division staff, which includes scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, preparing for meetings, taking minutes, processing incoming mail, and responding to information requests.
Maintaining effective communication between Human Rights Watch offices, global staff, and external partners to ensure seamless collaboration.
Proofreading, formatting, and distributing various materials such as reports, news releases, briefing papers, letters, op-eds, and web content, while coordinating the publication process and translations of these materials.
Coding and updating online documents to ensure accurate and accessible information.
Recording, tracking, and processing divisional finances and donations to maintain financial integrity.
Assisting with desk research, news monitoring, press clippings, and wires to support the division's advocacy efforts.
Helping organize events such as advisory committee meetings, advocacy meetings, staff meetings, and other special events, both virtually and in-person in New York.
Assisting with the recruitment and coordination of interns and other divisional staff to enhance team capacity.
Carrying out other duties as required to support the division's objectives and initiatives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent training/experience. Extensive relevant administrative experience and a demonstrated passion for human rights work are highly encouraged. The ideal candidate will have prior office/administration experience, meticulous attention to detail, flexibility, and strong organizational skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French are required, while fluency in additional languages, particularly Spanish or Arabic, is highly desirable. A commitment to children’s rights and human rights is essential, along with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well under pressure while managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Candidates should be able to make sound decisions consistent with job responsibilities and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision, functioning both independently and as part of a global team. Proficiency in computer applications, including MS Office, is required.
Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree is required for this position. Candidates with equivalent training or extensive relevant administrative experience are also encouraged to apply, demonstrating a strong foundation in skills necessary for the role.
Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of full-time relevant work experience is required for this position. This experience should ideally be in an administrative or office support role, providing the candidate with the necessary skills to manage the diverse responsibilities of the Associate position effectively.
Languages: Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French are mandatory for this role. Fluency in additional languages, particularly Spanish or Arabic, is considered highly desirable and would be an asset in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.
Additional Notes: Candidates must possess valid work authorization in the United States, as HRW is unable to sponsor work authorization for this role. The salary range for this position is USD 60,601 - 64,928, and Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance, along with an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days of vacation per year.
