Job Overview: The Europe and Central Asia Division Intern position at Human Rights Watch in Berlin offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in meaningful work related to human rights and rule of law issues across Europe and the post-Soviet space. Interns will be expected to work full-time, dedicating 35 hours per week for a duration of three months, starting in late October or early November 202
The internship is designed for students who are enrolled in academic programs and is intended to fulfill the requirements of a mandatory internship (pflichtpraktikum) related to their studies. Interns will gain hands-on experience by working closely with the divisional director, researchers, and advocacy staff, thereby deepening their understanding of the organization's mission and the complexities of human rights work in the region. The role will involve conducting research, drafting materials, and analyzing developments in various countries, providing interns with a comprehensive view of the challenges and opportunities in the field of human rights.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the work of the Europe and Central Asia Division. These include conducting background desk research on human rights issues, drafting research and advocacy materials, and monitoring political, legal, and human rights developments across the region. Interns will assist in preparing briefings and supporting outreach efforts to government officials, diplomats, journalists, and civil society partners. Depending on ongoing projects, interns may have the chance to participate in meetings with German government ministries and parliament, attend external events, and contribute to rapid-response research initiatives. Additional assignments may be given based on the intern's interests and the needs of the division, allowing for a dynamic and engaging internship experience. Interns will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and workshops, enhancing their professional development and networking with other HRW interns and staff.
Required Qualifications: Eligible applicants must be students currently enrolled in a university or academic institution for the duration of the internship. They must also be eligible for a pflichtpraktikum, which means the internship should be a mandatory component of their studies. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of the EU institutions and their policies, with relevant coursework in areas such as human rights, international law, and the political landscape of Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, and Central Asia. Strong writing and research skills are essential, and previous experience in EU policy or human rights work is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate organizational skills, self-motivation, and reliability, along with a genuine interest in human rights issues.
Educational Background: Candidates must be enrolled in a university or other academic institution during the internship period. The internship is particularly suited for students pursuing degrees in fields related to human rights, international relations, political science, or law, especially those with coursework focused on the EU, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. This educational background is crucial as it provides the theoretical foundation necessary for understanding the complex human rights issues that the intern will be addressing.
Experience: The position is aimed at students who may not have extensive professional experience but possess relevant academic knowledge and skills. Previous internships or volunteer work related to human rights, EU policy, or research in the region will be considered advantageous. The internship is designed to provide practical experience and professional development opportunities, making it suitable for students at various stages of their academic careers.
Languages: Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within the organization. Proficiency in German is desirable, as it will facilitate engagement with local stakeholders and enhance the intern's ability to conduct research and participate in discussions. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region, such as Russian or Ukrainian, would also be beneficial but is not required.
Additional Notes: The internship is a full-time position requiring a commitment of 35 hours per week for three months. Interns will receive a gross monthly stipend of EUR 556 to help cover living expenses, which will be prorated based on the intern's schedule. It is important for applicants to possess valid work authorization in Germany for the duration of the internship.
