Job Overview:
The Safety Engineer position is part of the Technical coordination-team" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Coordination team for the CMS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The successful candidate will join the Safety Team and will be responsible for familiarizing themselves with CERN and CMS safety systems, alarms, hazard identification, and risk assessment processes. The role involves supporting the CMS LEXGLIMOS (Large Experiment Group Leader in Matters of Safety) and working closely with the CMS Technical Coordination team to implement CERN's safety objectives within CMS. The engineer will contribute to drafting and reviewing risk assessments and procedures for various projects and activities, particularly in support of the LS3 CMS upgrade. Additionally, the role includes managing fire safety compliance for materials used in CMS Phase II Upgrade Projects, performing incident analyses, and supporting emergency preparedness activities within CMS. This position requires a proactive approach to safety and a commitment to continuous improvement in safety practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Support the CMS LEXGLIMOS by collaborating with the CMS Technical Coordination team to implement safety objectives and define priorities and timelines.
• Draft and review risk assessments and procedures for projects, works, areas, and activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
• Update the Safety File, particularly in support of the LS3 CMS upgrade.
• Manage and assess fire safety compliance of materials used in CMS Phase II Upgrade Projects, including conducting follow-up risk assessments for potentially non-compliant materials.
• Perform incident analyses and follow up on the implementation of safety actions and measures to foster continuous improvement.
• Support emergency preparedness activities, including the coordination and organization of planned evacuations.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective communication and implementation of safety measures.
• Draft safety documentation and deliver presentations in English or French, as required.
• Maintain familiarity with data handling, reporting, and technical documentation relevant to safety practices.

Required Qualifications:

• Basic experience in engineering, specifically in safety, industrial, mechanical, or a related field.
• Exposure to laboratory, workshop, or technical environments.
• Initial experience in risk assessment, hazard identification, fire safety, and related safety measures, gained through academic projects, internships, or similar activities.
• Familiarity with data handling, reporting, and technical documentation.
• Experience working in multidisciplinary or team-based projects.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
• Proactive, organized, and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple tasks independently and as part of a team.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen interest in safety, engineering, and project delivery.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Safety or Industrial Engineering, or a related field. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible for this position, and those with a PhD are also not eligible. The educational qualification must be completed by the application deadline.

Experience:
Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Safety or Industrial Engineering (or a related field). Initial experience can be gained through academic projects, internships, or similar activities that relate to safety and risk management.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. The ability to draft safety documentation and deliver oral presentations in at least one of CERN's two official languages is essential.

The position is fully onsite and has a contract duration of 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum. The target start date for this position is January 1, 202

• The role may involve work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and requires residence in the immediate vicinity of CERN's installations. A valid driving license is necessary, and the candidate may be required to work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. Due to occupational health risks, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. The position offers a monthly net stipend of either 5266 or 5793 Swiss Francs, depending on the degree, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, a relocation package, and opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
