Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With over 2,500 employees and a diverse community of scientists and engineers from more than 100 countries, CERN is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knowledge in the field of particle physics. The organization operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, and is known for its collaborative environment that fosters innovation and scientific discovery. CERN's mission is to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe through advanced research and technology, making it a pivotal institution in the global scientific community.

Job Overview:
The Geotechnical Engineer position at CERN involves supporting the Future Circular Collider (FCC) site investigations campaign, which includes managing approximately 100 deep boreholes. The role requires a graduate engineer with experience in geotechnical and/or underground civil engineering to join the civil engineering team working on the FCC project. The engineer will be responsible for project management, permitting, stakeholder engagement, and design studies related to the underground and surface civil engineering infrastructure of the FCC. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research and development in a collaborative and innovative environment, where the engineer will engage in various tasks that require both technical expertise and effective communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Geotechnical Engineer will support the site investigations project manager by providing both site-based and office support for the planning, execution, and reporting of the site investigations campaign. Key responsibilities include assisting with design reviews of tunnels, shafts, caverns, and surface structures, ensuring that consultant deliverables meet the project brief, design codes, and CERN requirements. The engineer will also support geotechnical calculations and analyses, assess construction methods such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) and conventional excavation, and evaluate their interaction with ground conditions. Additionally, the engineer will contribute to the project geotechnical and hydrogeological risk register, assist in options studies for alignment and site layout, and support cost estimates, construction schedules, and quantity take-offs for civil works. The role also involves translating site investigation findings into design parameters and geotechnical baseline information, preparing technical notes, drawings mark-ups, and presentation materials for internal reviews and public engagement, and liaising with other CERN groups on interfaces with civil works.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have a strong academic background in geotechnical engineering and some experience working in a consultancy or contractor specializing in geotechnical works, either surface or underground. A solid understanding of soil and rock mechanics is essential, along with basic experience in geotechnical modeling. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geotechnical data management is also required. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to work effectively in an international team, adapt to changing requirements, and manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are crucial for interacting with specialists and non-specialists alike.

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to have a professional background in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering (or a related field). Applicants should hold either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. It is important that candidates have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in geotechnical engineering, particularly in consultancy or contracting roles that focus on geotechnical works. Those with a PhD should have some practical experience, ideally not exceeding 3 years post-graduation. Experience in project management and stakeholder engagement is also beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is considered a valuable asset for the position. Proficiency in additional languages may also be advantageous but is not required.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers a hybrid flexibility model. The target start date for the position is February 1, 202
  • A valid driving license is required for this role. The job reference is SCE-PPM-FC-2026-169-GRAP. The position offers a competitive monthly net stipend ranging from 6,372 to 7,004 Swiss Francs, depending on the candidate's degree. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year, plus an additional two weeks of annual closure. CERN provides comprehensive health insurance coverage for employees and their families, along with membership in the CERN Pension Fund. Additional benefits include family, child, and infant monthly allowances based on individual circumstances, a relocation package, and opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
