Job Overview: The Regional Communications and Media Adviser plays a strategic role within the West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) team. This position involves developing and implementing a regional communications strategy that aligns with UNFPA's global communication priorities while addressing the unique challenges and opportunities within the region. The adviser is responsible for enhancing public awareness of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) core issues and UNFPA's initiatives through effective media engagement and public advocacy. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including country offices, to ensure consistent messaging and branding across the region. The adviser will also provide strategic communication support during emergencies and humanitarian contexts, ensuring that UNFPA's mission and objectives are effectively communicated to diverse audiences.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Regional Communications and Media Adviser include:
Developing and managing a regional communication strategy that promotes ICPD issues and strengthens political will in support of UNFPA's mission.
Coordinating media activities for significant regional events, including visits by senior UNFPA officials and the launch of key reports.
Crafting internal communications materials such as key messages, statements, and talking points for press events.
Preparing for potential reputational crises and implementing crisis management strategies.
Overseeing the production and distribution of communication materials to advocate for organizational goals.
Managing the regional website to ensure timely and accurate content.
Identifying and promoting UNFPA publications to establish the organization as a regional knowledge leader.
Providing strategic guidance and support to country offices in developing their communication strategies and enhancing their media outreach capabilities.
Maintaining relationships with media representatives to generate positive coverage of UNFPA's work. 1
Leading knowledge management initiatives to share best practices and lessons learned across the region.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field, combined with significant professional experience in communication. A minimum of ten years of experience in achieving impactful media coverage and managing brand reputation for international organizations is required. Candidates should demonstrate a solid network of journalist contacts, superior writing skills, and the ability to navigate complex communication environments. Experience in crisis management and a strong understanding of ICPD issues are essential. Candidates should also exhibit leadership qualities, integrity, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural setting.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field is required. Candidates with equivalent professional experience in communication, combined with an advanced degree in a relevant discipline, will also be considered. Continuous professional development in communication strategies and public relations is advantageous.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of ten years of professional experience in communication, with a proven track record of achieving significant media coverage and enhancing brand recognition for international organizations. Experience in crisis management and a solid understanding of the ICPD Programme of Action are critical. Candidates should have experience working in international public relations and managing PR vendors, which is desirable but not mandatory.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory to facilitate effective communication with both English-speaking and French-speaking stakeholders in the West and Central Africa region. Proficiency in additional languages is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's ability to engage with diverse audiences.
