Job Overview: The Subject Matter Expert for Automotive Industry will play a crucial role in the Energy and Sustainable Business (ESB) program, which aims to advance decarbonization among corporates in Indonesia while balancing economic development needs. This position involves providing technical expertise on steel use and production costs in Indonesia's vehicle manufacturing sector, specifically contributing to the study titled 'Creating Lead Market for Low Emission Steel in Indonesia: Choosing the Right Sectoral Starting Point.' The expert will utilize their existing knowledge and experience to inform the study, ensuring that the findings are relevant and actionable. The role requires collaboration with industry practitioners and the research team to validate data and assumptions, ultimately supporting Indonesia's transition towards net zero emissions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the Subject Matter Expert include completing the product portfolio section in the provided worksheet by selecting vehicle product types that represent typical products. The expert will fill in the steel bill of materials and quantities (BOM/BOQ) for each selected product type, documenting the steel form, type, quantity, material origin, applicable grades, and environmental specifications. Additionally, the expert will provide a detailed cost breakdown for each product type across various cost categories, including raw materials, labor, equipment, subcontractors, overhead, and design. They will also document the assumptions behind each figure and facilitate a focus group discussion with industry practitioners to validate and refine the data collected. The role requires strong technical judgment and the ability to engage effectively with industry stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Automotive Engineering, or a related field. Advanced degrees such as a PhD or candidates currently pursuing a PhD with relevant expertise are also welcome to apply. A minimum of five years of professional experience in automotive production facilities is required, with direct involvement in building cars and/or motorcycles, particularly in body-in-white (BiW) design or production. Candidates should demonstrate hands-on experience with BOM/BOQ preparation and analysis, as well as a strong understanding of automotive steel types, grades, and manufacturing cost structures. Experience across multiple original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) is preferred to capture variations in design and steel usage.
Educational Background: The position requires a Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field, such as Mechanical, Industrial, or Automotive Engineering. Higher academic qualifications, including a PhD or candidacy in related disciplines, are advantageous and encouraged for applicants.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least five years of relevant professional experience in the automotive industry, specifically in production facilities where they have been directly involved in the manufacturing of vehicles. This experience should include a strong focus on body-in-white design or production processes, as well as familiarity with the preparation and analysis of bills of materials and quantities related to steel components across various vehicle models.
Languages: Proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia is mandatory, as strong communication skills in this language are essential for engaging with local industry practitioners. Proficiency in English is considered an advantage, as it may facilitate communication with international stakeholders and enhance the candidate's ability to present findings and collaborate effectively.

The consultant will be compensated on a daily rate basis, with a maximum of 20 working days for the entire contract period, averaging 10 working days per month. Candidates must have existing work authorization in Indonesia, as WRI is unable to sponsor visas for this position. The role is open to Indonesian nationals, and final candidates may be required to take a test or provide writing samples as part of the selection process.
