Job Overview:
The position of IAEA Consultant - Technical Laboratory is crucial for providing technical and operational support to the Radiation Safety Technical Services (RSTS) Laboratory. The consultant will be involved in workplace monitoring, ensuring compliance with radiation safety regulations, and contributing to the quality assurance program for operational survey activities. The role requires a proactive approach to maintaining safety standards and providing technical services to staff and experts exposed to ionizing radiation. The consultant will also be responsible for handling radioactive materials and ensuring the calibration and maintenance of monitoring instruments, which are essential for the safe operation of the laboratory.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Conduct workplace monitoring for both routine and non-routine events, particularly during the establishment and decommissioning of laboratory installations and equipment.
• Provide support for radiation protection matters during the testing of technical and fire alarm systems at the laboratories.
• Handle radioactive materials, including nuclear, reference, and waste materials, as well as sealed sources within the laboratory environment.
• Maintain and calibrate monitoring instruments to ensure accurate measurements and compliance with safety standards.
• Control and perform special measurements of alpha contaminated waste packs prior to their disposal from the Nuclear Material Laboratory (NML) located in Seibersdorf.
• Deliver lectures and training sessions on radiation protection to staff and other stakeholders, enhancing their understanding and compliance with safety protocols.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in Physics, Chemistry, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in radiation measurements and protection is required, with hands-on experience in operational radiation protection within a laboratory setting. Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 quality management requirements is essential. The consultant should demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills in English, and knowledge of additional IAEA official languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish will be considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in a relevant scientific discipline, specifically in Physics, Chemistry, or related subjects. This foundational knowledge is critical for understanding the principles of radiation safety and protection, as well as for effectively conducting the technical tasks associated with the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the field of radiation measurements and protection. Candidates should have practical experience in operational radiation protection within a laboratory environment, which is vital for ensuring safety and compliance with established regulations. Experience working under ISO/IEC 17025 quality management standards is also necessary, as it demonstrates the candidate's ability to adhere to rigorous quality assurance protocols.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within the IAEA. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered advantageous and may enhance the candidate's ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders and colleagues.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy position offers a daily fee of up to a maximum of €250, which is determined based on the candidate's qualifications and experience. If the assignment requires duty travel, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs will be covered. It is important to note that health coverage and pension fund responsibilities lie with the consultant, emphasizing the need for candidates to be prepared for these aspects of the consultancy.
