Job Overview: The UN Associate Data Specialist position is integral to the UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Hanoi, Vietnam. This role focuses on enhancing the UN's data capabilities to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda. The Associate Data Specialist will work closely with various stakeholders, including UN agencies, national statistical partners, and NGOs, to develop and implement data systems that optimize statistical efficiency and quality. The position requires a strong understanding of data engineering, data science, and analytics, as well as the ability to communicate complex data insights effectively. The incumbent will contribute to the development of reports, dashboards, and other tools that summarize findings and convey the impact of UN development efforts. This role is essential for ensuring that the UN's data initiatives are aligned with national priorities and contribute to evidence-based decision-making.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate Data Specialist will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
Implementing databases, data collection systems, and data analytics strategies to enhance statistical efficiency and quality.
Analyzing and interpreting trends or patterns in data using statistical methods.
Improving processes for data analytics tasks and maintaining databases.
Developing monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) products for UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks.
Collaborating with national statistical partners to design digital tools and dashboards for tracking SDG progress.
Creating reports and dashboards to summarize findings for management.
Tracking progress on department-specific data initiatives.
Assisting with data collection and preliminary analysis for various projects.
Contributing to the production of data products like reports and newsletters. 1
Supporting capacity-building activities for staff on data analytics. 1
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in fields such as computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, applied mathematics, information management, or social sciences. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree) combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. The position requires a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in data science and analytics, with a strong understanding of statistics and predictive modeling. Skills in data storytelling and visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, and R are desirable, as is the ability to communicate complex data concepts to diverse audiences.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in relevant fields is required. A first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree) may be accepted in combination with additional qualifying experience. The educational background should ideally include coursework or training in data science, statistics, or related disciplines that provide a solid foundation for the analytical tasks required in this role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in data science and analytics. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of core data concepts, including statistics and predictive modeling. Experience in quality assurance of data analysis outputs and data validation is desirable. Familiarity with data visualization tools and the ability to communicate technical information effectively are also important.
Languages: English is the required working language for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
