The UNHCR Retainer Interpreter (Khmer) position is crucial for facilitating communication between UNHCR staff and Khmer-speaking asylum seekers and refugees. The role involves providing accurate and professional interpretation and translation services for various UNHCR activities, including Registration (REG), Refugee Status Determination (RSD), Resettlement (RST), and Community Services. The position may also involve interpreting for other UNHCR offices and delegations, as well as participating in training sessions and briefings. Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the UNHCR Retainer Interpreter (Khmer) include:
  • Accurately translating and interpreting documents related to REG, RSD, RST, and Community Services from Khmer to English and vice versa.
  • Conducting interpretation during interviews and counseling sessions with asylum seekers and refugees, ensuring clear communication of their needs and concerns.
  • Providing interpretation services for UNHCR staff and delegations during meetings and briefings, as requested.
  • Interpreting during Protection information sessions and training, including best interest determination discussions.
  • Handling telephone inquiries from asylum seekers and refugees, providing interpretation as needed.
  • Reporting on calls received for database recording and follow-up actions.
  • Performing additional interpretation and translation tasks as assigned by supervisors.
  • Supporting the organization of meetings and taking minutes/notes as required.
  • Assisting with immigration and customs formalities for official personnel at the airport. 1
  • Responding to queries related to the area of responsibility and managing risks associated with the role.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the UNHCR Retainer Interpreter (Khmer) position should possess the following qualifications:
  • Proven skills in proficiently communicating from Khmer to English and vice versa, including accurate listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Professional conduct and ethics in performing interpretation and translation services.
  • Prior experience in interpretation and translation is desirable, particularly in a humanitarian or refugee context.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Educational Background:

Experience:

Languages:
