Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Department of Operational Support (DOS) was established to provide essential support services to UN Secretariat entities, including peace operations and various departments and offices. The DOS aims to ensure that these entities succeed by offering rapid, effective, efficient, and responsible support. The organization focuses on core services such as supply chain management, operational human resources management, health-care management, capacity building, training for operations, support for uniformed capabilities, and information and communications technology (ICT) support. The Office of the Under-Secretary-General of Operational Support plays a crucial role in providing direct advisory, executive, and management support to DOS leadership, particularly to the Under-Secretary-General. The DOS operates globally, impacting numerous countries through its various support services and initiatives. The Performance and Analytics Section (PAS) within DOS is dedicated to strategy and planning, performance analytics, and innovation, contributing to the overall organizational performance of the Department.

Job Overview:
The Data Analytics BI Internship is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to the United Nations' mission while gaining valuable experience in data analytics. Interns will be integrated as full members of the Performance Analytics Section at the Office of the Under-Secretary-General, Department of Operational Support (PAS/OUSG/DOS). The internship will involve project assignments that are intended to make a significant impact on the work of the PAS, allowing interns to learn about the broader operations of the United Nations. Interns will engage in various tasks, including gathering and analyzing data from public and internal sources, performing statistical programming, and providing technical support for existing reports and dashboards. The role emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and the application of data analytics to enhance organizational performance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns in this position will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the goals of the Performance Analytics Section. Key duties include:
  • Gathering and analyzing data from various public sources, utilizing web scraping techniques, and preparing data models and surveys.
  • Performing statistical and/or mathematical programming to interpret and make sense of the collected data.
  • Providing technical support for existing reports, dashboards, and other analytical tools.
  • Assisting team members with data cleaning from primary or secondary sources and maintaining databases and data systems.
  • Translating data results into written reports and creating data visualizations or presentations to effectively communicate findings to stakeholders and leaders.
  • Supporting data mining, optimization, metrics development, and predictive analysis initiatives.
  • Contributing to the exploration of innovative approaches and methods that can lead to the development of new data products.
  • Performing other duties as required by the team.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). The organization is open to a diverse range of educational backgrounds, but typically, interns are pursuing studies in fields such as Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Visualization, or Analytics. No prior working experience is required to apply for this internship, but candidates should possess skills or knowledge that can benefit the United Nations during their internship.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes either a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree in relevant fields. Candidates should be enrolled in or have completed a program that provides them with the necessary skills and knowledge in data analytics, statistics, computer science, or related disciplines.   • While both in-person and remote work modalities are accepted, in-person attendance at the New York Headquarters (NYHQ) is preferred. Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations, and they are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. For non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents, obtaining a G4 visa and ensuring valid employment authorization is mandatory.
