Job Overview:
The Deputy Chief Development Officer (Deputy CDO) serves as the principal strategic and operational partner to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) and is a vital member of the Development Management Team (DevMT) that oversees a 100-person Development department. This role is pivotal in enhancing MSF USA's fundraising capabilities, which includes refining processes, governance, prioritization, and performance metrics to ensure sustainable growth of diversified revenue streams. The Deputy CDO will lead the department's core business processes, such as annual and multi-year planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance management, while promoting efficient collaboration across teams. A significant aspect of this role involves aligning audience teams around a unified donor pipeline, facilitating the movement of donors through various giving levels as their relationships evolve. The Deputy CDO is also responsible for establishing criteria for major initiatives, ensuring that fundraising plans are developed collaboratively, and that business cases are defined to outline expected returns and resource allocations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Deputy Chief Development Officer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities that include:
  • Partnering with the Chief Development Officer to develop and implement the fundraising strategy.
  • Acting as a strategic thought partner to high-touch fundraising leaders.
  • Driving the execution of decisions made by the Development Management Team and translating strategic direction into coordinated departmental plans.
  • Leading capacity building and professional development initiatives within the Development team.
  • Modeling inclusive leadership practices and representing the department in external forums and donor meetings.
  • Fostering collaboration between Development and other key organizational partners, including Communications, Finance, People and Culture, and Programs.
  • Advancing a culture of philanthropy across MSF USA by partnering with leaders to enhance shared responsibility for donor engagement and stewardship.
  • Leading department-wide planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes, and conducting regular performance reviews to monitor revenue and expenses.
  • Promoting efficient cross-team collaboration and applying fundraising expertise to set standards for donor management. 1
  • Establishing governance processes for major initiatives, including intake workflows and decision criteria, and facilitating leadership reviews.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate a deep alignment with MSF's mission and values, along with 10-12 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, particularly in one-to-one, high-touch relationship-based fundraising (major and/or legacy giving). A proven understanding of donor movement, retention, and long-term value is essential. Additionally, candidates should possess experience in leading annual and multi-year planning, goal setting, budgeting, and performance management within a complex fundraising environment. A strong track record in managing donor pipelines and portfolio practices, as well as aligning teams around shared priorities, is also required. Candidates should exhibit strong strategic judgment, prioritization skills, and a commitment to fostering a culture of philanthropy.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in international development, nonprofit management, public administration, business administration, communications, or a related field is required. Equivalent work experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education.
