Job Overview: The Officer Analysis position is integral to the Science & Technology Advice Branch (GAX) within NATO. The primary function of this role is to continuously identify and analyze trends in science and technology that could impact military operations. The incumbent will contribute to the periodic STO Tech Trends reports and deliver tailored analyses on the military implications of emerging technologies. This role requires close collaboration with various NATO stakeholders, including Strategic Commands and the International Military Staff, to prepare reports that inform capability development and military planning processes. The Officer will also draft papers and reports for a diverse range of stakeholders, including NATO officials and military leadership, ensuring that the Chief Scientist is well-prepared for engagements with senior military personnel. The position demands a proactive approach to understanding the evolving landscape of military technology and its implications for NATO's strategic objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Officer Analysis will be responsible for the following duties:
Continuously identify and analyze trends in science and technology to contribute to the STO Tech Trends reports, utilizing inputs from various NATO programs and open-source materials.
Deliver tailored reports on the military impact of technology trends to inform NATO's Defence Planning Process and Warfare Development Agenda.
Collaborate closely with Strategic Commands and the International Military Staff to prepare dedicated reports for the Chief Scientist's engagements with senior military leadership.
Work with the Defence Investment Division to support the Conference of National Armaments Directors and inform capability development within the armaments community.
Draft papers and reports for a wide range of stakeholders, including the North Atlantic Council and Military Committee, and prepare speaking notes for senior officials.
Supervise Officers in Analysis for specific tasks related to military technology impacts.
Support the Head of Branch in liaison activities with the International Military Staff.
Perform other related functions as directed by the Chief Scientist, which may include irregular working hours and frequent travel abroad.
Required Qualifications: The essential qualifications for this position include:
A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in defense and security policy or operational analysis.
At least 3 years of experience in science or technology at either the research or policy development level.
A broad operational knowledge of military technology and defense capabilities.
Demonstrated capacity for planning, analysis, and drafting proposals.
Proficiency in office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, graphics presentations, and database management.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree or a national military equivalent in a scientific, technical, engineering, or mathematical discipline relevant to defense and security. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of military technology and its applications.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience, particularly in defense and security policy or operational analysis. Experience in science or technology at a research or policy level is also required, along with a broad operational knowledge of military technology and defense capabilities.
Languages: Candidates must have a very good knowledge of one of the two official NATO languages, English or French (SLP 4444), and a good knowledge of the other language (SLP 3333). The primary working language for this position is English, making proficiency in English essential for effective communication and reporting.
Additional Notes: The successful applicant will be offered a definite duration contract of 3 years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional 3 years. This position may involve irregular working hours and frequent travel, including weekends.
