The position is located in the Office of the Director of the Financing for sustainable-development-office" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations. The FSDO is dedicated to advancing policy and action on financing for sustainable development, supporting Member States and stakeholders in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sevilla Commitment, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development. The office provides thought leadership, promotes multistakeholder dialogue, identifies policy options and best practices, and offers strategic advice and support for capacity development in key areas. Job Overview:
The Associate Economic Affairs Officer will report to the Director of FSDO and will primarily focus on international development cooperation. The role involves conducting economic and sector analysis, collecting and interpreting socioeconomic data, maintaining databases, preparing briefing notes and analytical studies, and assisting in organizing expert group meetings and consultations on development issues. The officer will also prepare inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies, follow intergovernmental meetings, and assist in organizing panels and round tables on development issues. The position requires a strong understanding of economic theories and their application in international development cooperation, as well as the ability to analyze data and convey information effectively to management and stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Associate Economic Affairs Officer include:
  • Conducting economic and/or sector analysis by collecting, evaluating, interpreting, and analyzing specified statistics and qualitative socioeconomic information from various sources.
  • Maintaining databases and organizing nonquantitative information.
  • Preparing briefing notes and inputs for speeches on economic or sector issues.
  • Drafting sector, country, or regional components of analytical studies on development issues and policies.
  • Assisting in organizing and servicing expert group meetings and consultations on development issues.
  • Preparing inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies and summarizing intergovernmental meetings.
  • Compiling and analyzing data for technical cooperation project proposals in economic development.
  • Preparing documentation for technical cooperation programs and projects.
  • Monitoring and assessing the implementation of technical cooperation programs and projects. 1
  • Performing various administrative tasks necessary for the delivery of the work unit’s services. 1
  • Undertaking training activities and contributing to data collection and analysis for decision-making and reporting.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a first-level university degree in economics, development studies, international relations, public policy, or a related field. Candidates should possess knowledge of economic theories and their application in international development cooperation, including system-wide coherence and financing for sustainable development. The ability to identify and develop sources for data collection, undertake research, analyze data, and write reports is essential. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and effective planning and organizing skills.

Educational Background:
A first-level university degree in economics, development studies, international relations, public policy, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background provides the necessary foundation for understanding economic principles and their application in development contexts.

Experience:
Candidates must have a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, or related areas. At least one year of this experience should be in international development cooperation. Experience in supporting capacity development activities and workshops is required, along with knowledge of South-South and triangular cooperation and relevant intergovernmental processes. Desirable experience includes supporting the servicing of intergovernmental bodies and data analytics.

Languages:
English is required for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, and proficiency in French is considered desirable but not mandatory for this role.

This position is temporarily available until 31 December 2026, with the possibility of extension.
