Job Overview: The Accounting Specialist position at SHAPE is a temporary role that is essential for supporting the finance and accounting activities related to the Special Operations Forces Command (SOFCOM). The Accounting Specialist will report directly to the Section Head of Centralized Finance & Accounting and will play a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of financial records and ensuring compliance with NATO financial regulations. The position is designed for individuals who possess a valid NATO security clearance or have previously held one, emphasizing the importance of security and trust in this role.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Accounting Specialist will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: providing expertise in SOFCOM cash management and finance activities; facilitating the timely processing of financial transactions; contributing to the revision of business processes and workflows; serving as a Subject Matter Expert for team members; identifying and escalating operational discrepancies; maintaining official accounts; advising budget holders on the status of their accounts; analyzing financial data for audits; preparing desk finance and accounting guidance; responding to formal inquiries; monitoring budget execution; supervising reconciliations of reimbursable accounts; liaising with HRM finance sections; coordinating financial matters related to IPSAS; and operating ERP modules for financial transactions. The role requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess professional experience in finance, business management, accounting, or economics, with at least three years of experience as a user or analyst of financial ERP modules. A broad understanding of account analysis, cash flow forecasting, and financial controls is essential. Additionally, candidates should have experience with office automation software, particularly spreadsheets, and demonstrate strong analytical skills. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is crucial, along with a commitment to maintaining high ethical standards in financial management.
Educational Background: The position requires higher secondary education and completed vocational training in economics, accounting, business administration, public administration, finance, or management. Candidates with a secondary education and advanced vocational training leading to professional accreditation will also be considered, provided they have five years of relevant experience. A university degree or postgraduate diploma in Accounting, Finance, Management, or a related field is desirable and may enhance a candidate's application.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in finance or accounting roles. Experience with financial ERP systems and a strong background in financial analysis and reconciliation are critical. Additional Notes: The position is a temporary role with a contract duration until December 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension. The work schedule is 38 hours per week, and employees are entitled to 2.5 paid days of leave for each month worked.
