Job Overview:
The Digital & AI Specialist position at the World Bank Group is a critical role aimed at enhancing the organization's engagement in digital development within the South Asia region. The specialist will be responsible for leveraging their expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation to support client countries in navigating the complexities of AI adoption and implementation. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of the full lifecycle of AI systems, from identifying use cases and assessing feasibility to guiding governments through the deployment and scaling of AI solutions. The specialist will work closely with various stakeholders, including government officials and development partners, to design and implement strategies that strengthen digital public infrastructure and promote responsible AI practices. The overarching goal is to enable countries to harness digital opportunities effectively while addressing emerging challenges in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Digital & AI Specialist will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: supporting policy dialogue with senior government officials, coordinating efforts across relevant government agencies and development partners, and contributing to the design and supervision of World Bank Group financed investment and policy reform programs focused on digital and AI initiatives. The specialist will advise clients on best practices for developing the foundations of their digital economies, including the design and implementation of digital public infrastructure systems that enhance citizen-centric service delivery. Additionally, the specialist will provide technical leadership in the deployment of AI solutions, ensuring that they are integrated with existing digital public infrastructure and aligned with responsible AI principles. The role also involves assessing sector-specific AI applications for development, operationalizing responsible AI practices, and building the technical capacity of client institutions to sustain AI solutions over time.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Digital & AI Specialist position must possess a Master's degree in a relevant field such as telecommunications, engineering, computer science, data science, artificial intelligence/machine learning, law, economics, or public policy. A minimum of five years of experience in digital transformation or AI, including the design and deployment of AI/ML systems, is required. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of digital public infrastructure, AI governance, and the intersection of digital technologies with development outcomes in sectors such as health, education, and financial inclusion. Proven experience in leading policy dialogue and influencing reforms in low-capacity settings is essential, along with hands-on experience in deploying AI systems in public sector contexts.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as telecommunications, engineering, computer science, data science, artificial intelligence/machine learning, law, economics, or public policy. This advanced education should be complemented by practical experience in digital transformation and AI, particularly in the context of public sector applications and development initiatives.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have at least five years of relevant experience in digital transformation and/or AI, with a focus on the design, deployment, or oversight of AI/ML systems. Experience in digital economy policy, regulation, or project design and implementation is also crucial. Candidates should have a proven track record of engaging in policy dialogue and operations related to digital public infrastructure and AI, as well as familiarity with the role of the private sector in digital infrastructure development.

Languages:
Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is essential for effective communication with clients and stakeholders. While English is the primary language required, familiarity with additional languages may be considered advantageous, particularly in the context of engaging with diverse populations in the South Asia region.
