Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN's mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of the universe through groundbreaking research and innovation. The organization has a diverse workforce and operates in multiple countries, fostering an environment of collaboration and inclusion.
Job Overview: As a Structural engineer" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Civil Engineer at CERN, you will play a crucial role in the design, analysis, and technical oversight of civil engineering structures throughout their lifecycle. This includes everything from feasibility studies to construction support. Your contributions will be vital in the development, maintenance, and rehabilitation of CERN's infrastructure, ensuring that all structures meet safety standards and comply with applicable regulations. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and external partners, making this position integral to the success of various projects. The role requires a strong understanding of civil engineering principles and the ability to apply them in a practical context, ensuring structural integrity and safety in all engineering endeavors.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your primary responsibilities will include performing feasibility, preliminary, and detailed design studies for civil engineering structures, which encompass surface buildings, underground installations, roads, and utility networks. You will conduct structural analysis and dimensioning, seismic design, and develop structural concepts and technical solutions tailored to project constraints. Additionally, you will review, validate, and coordinate design drawings and models produced by both internal drafters and external consultants, actively participating in the BIM management process to ensure technical consistency. Assessing existing structures will also be part of your duties, where you will define reinforcement, adaptation, or modification solutions and contribute to infrastructure maintenance and consolidation programs through structural diagnostics and condition assessments. You will prepare technical specifications, collaborate with Procurement on calls for tender, and manage framework contracts related to structural engineering services. Supporting construction phases through technical follow-up, site inspections, and validation of works will also be essential to your role.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must possess a Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in civil engineering or a related field. You should have demonstrated experience in civil engineering design and structural calculations, particularly in reinforced and prestressed concrete, structural steel, and special civil works such as diaphragm walls and Berlin-type retaining walls. A solid understanding of road and infrastructure design, structural assessment and monitoring, cost estimation of construction works, and feasibility and preliminary studies is also required. Familiarity with underground structures and works, including technical galleries, tunnels, and caverns, is considered an asset, as is any first experience in hydraulic calculations and network design.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's Degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. This advanced degree should provide a comprehensive understanding of civil engineering principles, structural design, and the technical skills necessary to perform the duties outlined in this role. Relevant coursework and practical experience in structural analysis, design methodologies, and project management will be beneficial.
Experience: Candidates should have a proven track record of experience in civil engineering design and structural calculations. This includes hands-on experience with reinforced and prestressed concrete, structural steel, and special civil works. Experience in road and infrastructure design, as well as structural assessment and monitoring, is essential. Additionally, familiarity with cost estimation and preliminary studies will enhance your candidacy for this position.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being highly desirable. This bilingual requirement reflects CERN's diverse working environment and the need for effective communication across various teams and projects.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for three years, with the possibility of extension up to eight years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role is fully onsite, requiring work in radiation areas and interventions in underground installations. A valid driving license is also necessary for this position. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this job is SCE-TOD-DO-2026-170-LD. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free and increases with relevant experience, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
