Job Overview:
The position of Instrumentation Engineer within the Cryogenic Group at CERN is integral to the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider project. The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment that emphasizes cryogenic instrumentation, control systems, and electrical engineering. The role involves contributing to research and development activities, as well as the design, reception, and maintenance of tooling and test benches used for validation and commissioning operations. The engineer will be responsible for developing new cryogenic instrumentation, ensuring its design and qualification under challenging operating conditions, and maintaining existing test benches. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and collaboration within a diverse team, as well as a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation to new technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Instrumentation Engineer will be tasked with the following responsibilities:
  • Develop new cryogenic instrumentation such as pressure, level, temperature sensors, and heaters, ensuring their design and qualification for the complex operating conditions of CERN accelerators.
  • Maintain existing test benches based on LabVIEW, including legacy systems, and develop new test facilities for the qualification of radiation-tolerant electronic cards.
  • Calibrate absolute and differential pressure sensors and perform associated data analysis.
  • Provide field support for cryogenic instrumentation deployed across CERN accelerators and cryogenic plants, including diagnostics, maintenance, and repair activities to ensure reliable operation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and contribute to the training and supervision of students.
  • Conduct testing, calibration, and validation of instrumentation sensors under cryogenic conditions.
  • Analyze performance and optimize cryogenic instrumentation systems.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and instrumentation issues in complex process systems.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the following qualifications:
  • A professional background in Applied Physics, Electromechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related field.
  • A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • Previous experience with front-end and back-end electronics, real-time data acquisition systems, and performance analysis of cryogenic instrumentation systems is essential.
  • Practical knowledge of measurement and electronic technologies in operational environments is required.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree or PhD in Applied Physics, Electromechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a closely related field. The educational qualifications should be complemented by relevant professional experience in the field, particularly in cryogenic instrumentation and control systems.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a professional experience level that includes either 2 to 6 years of post-graduation experience for those with a Master's degree or up to 3 years of post-graduation experience for those with a PhD. This experience should be relevant to the development and maintenance of cryogenic instrumentation and systems, as well as working in multidisciplinary teams.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. Proficiency in both languages is considered an asset and will enhance communication within the diverse team at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers flexibility with a hybrid working model. The target start date for this position is December 1, 202
  • The role involves working in radiation areas and performing interventions in underground installations, necessitating a valid driving license. The compensation includes a monthly net stipend ranging from 6,372 to 7,004 Swiss Francs, depending on the candidate's degree, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package based on individual circumstances. Additionally, on-the-job and formal training, including language classes, will be provided.
