Job Overview: The Senior Communications Consultant will play a pivotal role in enhancing the global visibility and influence of UNEP's Buildings Portfolio. This position requires a strategic communications professional who can transform technical knowledge into compelling narratives and produce high-impact multimedia content. The consultant will lead efforts across five strategic pillars: Strategic Communications and Narrative Development, Storytelling and Multimedia Production, GlobalABC Communications and Stakeholder Engagement, Advocacy, Events and Global Campaigns, and Digital Communications, Knowledge Translation and Thought Leadership. The consultant will be responsible for developing overarching narratives, creating strategic messaging frameworks, producing compelling human-centered stories, and managing digital communications activities. The role demands creativity, innovation, and the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including governments, donors, and the media.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant's duties will include developing strategic messaging and narrative frameworks, creating communications plans for major reports and campaigns, producing multimedia content, leading communications support for GlobalABC, coordinating outreach activities, and managing communications for major international events. The consultant will also be responsible for developing social media and digital content plans, monitoring audience engagement, and producing communications materials that amplify UNEP's influence within global climate discussions. Specific deliverables will include strategic messaging frameworks, storytelling campaigns, communications toolkits, event communications packages, and quarterly analytics reports.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, International Relations, Public Affairs, Marketing, Digital Communications, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with additional qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Additionally, a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, storytelling, journalism, multimedia production, digital communications, public information, advocacy, or related fields is required. Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing international communications campaigns is essential, along with experience in producing multimedia and digital storytelling content.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, International Relations, Public Affairs, Marketing, Digital Communications, or a related field. Candidates with a first-level university degree combined with additional qualifying experience may also be considered. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of communications in an international context and for effectively engaging with diverse stakeholders.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, storytelling, journalism, multimedia production, digital communications, public information, advocacy, or related fields. Candidates should have a proven track record of designing and implementing international communications campaigns, producing multimedia and digital storytelling content, and supporting senior-level stakeholder engagement and high-profile events. Experience working with international organizations, multilateral institutions, or United Nations agencies is highly desirable, particularly in areas related to climate change, sustainable development, urban development, buildings, construction, energy, or environmental issues.
Languages: Excellent written and spoken English is required for this position, along with strong editing and content development skills. Proficiency in French and other UN languages is considered desirable, as it enhances the consultant's ability to engage with a broader range of stakeholders and audiences.
Additional Notes: The position is home-based, but candidates must be located within ±2 hours of the Paris (CET/CEST) time zone. The expected duration of the consultancy is 7 months. The role is full-time and involves significant engagement with various stakeholders, including governments, private sector leaders, and international partners.
