Job Overview:
The Science Communications Specialist consultant will play a crucial role in enhancing the visibility and impact of IMEO’s methane science studies and satellite-based alert systems. This position involves developing and delivering strategic communications outputs that support IMEO’s global scientific research campaigns and key data products. The consultant will be responsible for conceiving and implementing comprehensive communications plans, crafting engaging content, and contributing to significant events and activations. The role requires a proactive approach to communications, ensuring that all outputs align with UNEP and IMEO’s overall messaging and brand identity. The consultant will work in a fast-paced, international environment, collaborating with various stakeholders to effectively communicate complex scientific information to diverse audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Science Communications Specialist will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: developing and implementing communications plans that support IMEO’s workstreams, such as the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) and Methane Science Studies; producing messaging and speaking points for proactive communications and media engagements; tracking upcoming announcements and events to ensure they are reflected in IMEO’s communications calendar; coordinating communications planning for IMEO events and engagements; producing event materials including agendas, speaker briefs, and promotional content; engaging with IMEO scientific grantees and partners to enhance visibility efforts; creating and editing written and digital content, such as blogs, press releases, and reports; and collaborating with the Digital Media Expert to advance multimedia content and maintain relevant digital properties.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level degree (e.g., Bachelor's) in Communications, Journalism, Social Sciences, Humanities, or a related field. A minimum of 6 years of experience in communications, content strategy, or journalism is required, preferably with a focus on the climate or energy sector. Candidates should demonstrate impeccable writing and editing skills, with a proven ability to translate complex topics into clear and concise messaging for diverse audiences. Experience in collaborating across workstreams and subject matter experts is essential, along with a solutions-oriented approach and strong project management skills. Familiarity with Google Analytics and KPI tracking is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a first-level degree in a relevant field such as Communications, Journalism, Social Sciences, or Humanities. This foundational education is crucial for understanding the principles of effective communication and content strategy, particularly in relation to scientific and environmental topics.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in communications, content strategy, or journalism. Candidates should have a strong background in the climate or energy sector, with a focus on science communications being highly desirable. Experience in delivering impactful content under tight deadlines and collaborating with various stakeholders is essential for success in this role.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNEP's IMEO. Proficiency in French is also required, as both languages are working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with a broader audience.
