Job Overview: The psychiatrist will be responsible for providing treatment to patients suffering from common and severe psychiatric disorders, with a strong emphasis on cultural context. The role also includes evaluating available psychiatric services in the intervention country, including psychiatric hospitalization options and the quality of these services, and establishing communication and collaboration with other medical specialists involved in the project to develop a multidisciplinary approach to care.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide treatment to patients with common and severe psychiatric disorders, considering cultural contexts.
Train and supervise national and international medical staff (doctors and nurses) in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders based on MSF guidelines.
Participate in mental health team interventions, supervising and supporting national psychologists and counselors.
Ensure the availability of psychotropic medications listed in MSF's standard medication list.
Collect and supervise necessary information for treatment and follow-up to ensure quality care.
Evaluate psychiatric services available in the country of intervention, including psychiatric hospitalization options and their quality.
Establish links with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and explore the viability of psychiatric treatment.
Collaborate with other medical specialists involved in the project to develop a multidisciplinary approach to care.
Required Qualifications:
Medical degree with specialization in psychiatry.
Valid medical license to practice in the country of operation.
Experience in mental health care, particularly in emergency or humanitarian settings.
Strong understanding of cultural factors affecting mental health treatment.
Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and provide training and supervision to other medical staff.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Educational Background: A medical degree (MD or equivalent) with a specialization in psychiatry is required. Additional training or certifications in mental health care, particularly in emergency or humanitarian contexts, is highly desirable.
Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in psychiatry, with a focus on mental health care in challenging environments. Experience working with international organizations or in humanitarian settings is preferred.
Languages: Fluency in French is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication in the region. Proficiency in English is considered an asset, as it may facilitate communication with international staff and resources.
Additional Notes: This position is full-time and may require flexibility in working hours due to the nature of the work.
