Job Overview: The Computing Engineer position at CERN is focused on joining the IT Storage and Data Management group (IT-SD), which plays a crucial role in managing large-scale data access for the laboratory and its experimental programs, including the Large Hadron Collider. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Engineer include developing and integrating backend software components, packaging and deploying interoperable services in distributed environments, and providing support to the CERN community by joining the operations team to troubleshoot incidents and assist users. The engineer will also contribute code, features, and fixes back to the CERNBox open-source projects, collaborating with a broader open-source community. Furthermore, the role involves working with partner institutions and research infrastructures across Europe to test, validate, and refine tools, as well as supporting users and partner teams in adopting these tools, providing troubleshooting and guidance as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have experience or a strong interest in backend development and cloud-native deployment. They should enjoy troubleshooting, hands-on problem-solving, user support, and service management. The ideal candidate will be comfortable collaborating with external partners and international teams and should possess curiosity about system integration and interoperability challenges. Proficiency in Kubernetes and Helm chart development, backend software development (particularly in Go), and familiarity with the Linux tech stack, administration, and automation are essential. Frontend development skills are considered a plus.
Educational Background: Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering or a related field. It is important that candidates have graduated within the last two years and have not previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. Individuals without a university degree or those with a PhD are not eligible for this position.
Experience: The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. Candidates should have relevant experience in backend development and cloud-native deployment, as well as a demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and support users effectively.
