Job Overview: The Human Rights Officer position is situated within the Business and Human Rights Section of the OHCHR, specifically under the Rule of Law, Accountability and Civic Space Branch. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting in-depth research and analysis on business and human rights issues, assessing their implications on human rights in various contexts. This role requires the integration of gender equality considerations into all aspects of work related to business and human rights. The officer will also represent the OHCHR at various events and meetings, coordinate capacity-building initiatives, and produce reports and communications on relevant topics. The position demands a proactive approach to engage with stakeholders and implement strategies that promote business and human rights at multiple levels, including national and international.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Human Rights Officer will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: conducting substantive research and analysis of business and human rights issues; ensuring the integration of these issues into political, humanitarian, and economic efforts; defining work plans in accordance with established terms of reference; representing the OHCHR at events and meetings; coordinating capacity-building efforts; writing reports, briefings, and statements related to business and human rights; drafting statements and briefing notes for senior officials; initiating publications on business and human rights themes; responding to inquiries related to business and human rights; participating in the organization of meetings and seminars; engaging with stakeholders to foster business and human rights initiatives; providing guidance to junior staff; and performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong knowledge of human rights issues, particularly in relation to business and human rights. They should have experience working with various stakeholders, including states and businesses, to implement projects that align with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The ability to conduct research, analyze data, and draft comprehensive reports is essential. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and effective planning and organizing skills. They must also be able to incorporate gender perspectives into their work and ensure equal participation of all genders in their initiatives.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in fields such as human rights, law, political science, international relations, social sciences, economics, public policy, sustainable development, or humanitarian affairs is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in areas such as human rights, political affairs, international relations, or law is required. Candidates must have experience specifically related to business and human rights, including conducting research and providing analytical advice for human rights reports and programs. Experience in project management and leading teams is also necessary for this role.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, proficiency in English is required, with a minimum level of proficiency as defined by the UN Language Framework. Knowledge of French is an asset but not mandatory.
Additional Notes: The appointment for this position is limited to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and its continuation is subject to the extension of the mandate and availability of funds. The selected candidate will receive a fixed-term appointment, and renewal will depend on the continued existence of the mandate and funding availability.
