Job Overview:
The UN Interpreter will play a crucial role in facilitating communication between UN officials, national authorities, and other stakeholders by providing consecutive and simultaneous interpretation services. This position requires a high level of professionalism and linguistic skill, ensuring that interpretation meets the standards of accuracy, consistency, and fidelity to the original statements. The Interpreter will be responsible for interpreting during meetings, conferences, and negotiations, as well as providing escort and field interpretation for visiting delegations. The role also involves reviewing and proofreading translated texts, maintaining terminology resources, and supporting the Chief/Head of Unit in organizing interpretation services. The Interpreter must adapt materials culturally and linguistically to ensure clarity and relevance in the local context, and may be assigned to high-level meetings requiring strict confidentiality and professionalism.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the UN Interpreter include:
  • Providing consecutive and simultaneous interpretation between local languages and designated UN working languages at various events.
  • Ensuring high standards of interpretation accuracy and fidelity to the original meaning.
  • Offering escort and field interpretation for visiting delegations during official visits and missions.
  • Facilitating communication between the UN and host-country institutions.
  • Providing interpretation and translation services during meetings and official engagements.
  • Reviewing and proofreading translated texts for accuracy and consistency.
  • Maintaining terminology resources and glossaries.
  • Interpreting specialized terminology across various fields.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a first-level degree from a university or an institution of equivalent status. Additionally, they should have at least five years of professional experience in English and Arabic translation and interpretation within international organizations, NGOs, or educational institutions. Experience within a UN special political mission is desirable, highlighting the need for familiarity with UN operations and standards.

Educational Background:
A first-level degree from a recognized university or an equivalent institution is required for this position. This educational background should ideally be complemented by specialized training in interpretation and translation, particularly in a multilingual environment such as the United Nations.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of professional experience in translation and interpretation, specifically in English and Arabic. Candidates should have a proven track record of working in international organizations, NGOs, or educational institutions. Experience within a UN special political mission is considered an asset, as it demonstrates familiarity with the UN's operational context and standards.

Languages:
For this position, proficiency in English and Arabic is mandatory, with both languages requiring a UN Level IV proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Knowledge of French is considered an advantage, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates must demonstrate their language skills according to the UN Language Framework, ensuring they can effectively communicate in a multilingual environment.
