Job Overview:
The Protection Officer position is crucial for ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations, particularly in the context of migration. The officer will be responsible for implementing protection strategies and activities that align with IOM's policies and international standards. This role involves assessing the protection needs of individuals and communities, developing and implementing protection interventions, and coordinating with various stakeholders including government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations. The officer will also be expected to provide technical support and guidance to field staff, ensuring that protection principles are integrated into all aspects of IOM's work. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of migration issues, human rights, and protection frameworks, as well as the ability to work in complex and challenging environments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct assessments to identify the protection needs of migrants and displaced persons.
  • Develop and implement protection strategies and programs in line with IOM's policies.
  • Coordinate with local authorities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive approach to protection.
  • Provide technical support and training to IOM staff and partners on protection issues.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of protection interventions and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Prepare reports and documentation related to protection activities and outcomes.
  • Advocate for the rights of migrants and displaced persons at local, national, and international levels.
  • Stay updated on relevant laws, policies, and best practices in the field of migration and protection.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of international human rights law, migration issues, and protection frameworks. They should demonstrate excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, along with the ability to present complex information clearly and persuasively. Candidates should also have experience in project management and the ability to work under pressure in challenging environments.

Educational Background:
A university degree in social sciences, international relations, law, or a related field is required. A master's degree in a relevant discipline is preferred and may be considered an asset.

Experience:
A minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in protection, human rights, or migration-related fields is required. Experience working with vulnerable populations, particularly in a humanitarian or development context, is highly desirable. Familiarity with IOM's policies and procedures, as well as experience in project management, will be advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in Spanish is mandatory, and proficiency in English is considered an asset. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region would be beneficial.
