The internship is unpaid, and candidates must cover their own travel, accommodation, and living expenses. The intern will work under the supervision of the Chief of the Regional Office for Africa and will be involved in various tasks that support the dissemination of UNCTAD's research and the organization of meetings and briefings with stakeholders. This role provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the workings of the UN and contribute to important projects that impact economic development in Africa.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will have a diverse set of responsibilities including: supporting the dissemination of UNCTAD's research; assisting in organizing briefings and meetings with member states, regional economic communities, partners, and other stakeholders; developing concept notes and project proposals in selected areas of work; conducting analysis on topical issues related to UNCTAD's mandate; identifying updated and new relevant information and research documents; preparing briefing notes and workshop reports; summarizing conferences and meetings; identifying initiatives and major meetings at regional levels for UNCTAD participation; updating and improving information in office databases; performing internet-based research; and assisting with any other assignments as directed by the supervisor. Interns are also expected to adhere to the rules and regulations of the UN, respect confidentiality, and maintain impartiality and independence in their work.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. A degree in economics is specifically required for this position, and while professional work experience is not mandatory, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams, is essential.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a university degree in economics or a closely related field. They should be either in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), or have completed a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant degree must be provided during the application process. The ability to conduct desktop research and draft concept notes and project proposals is also desirable.
