Job Overview: The Consultant for Conflict Resolution is tasked with delivering a comprehensive range of informal dispute resolution services to UN personnel. This role involves engaging with employees both in-person and virtually, ensuring that all interactions are handled with the utmost confidentiality. The consultant will be responsible for receiving and managing confidential cases directly from the Chief of Service or the Regional Ombudsman, and will provide systemic feedback on observable conflict patterns when necessary. The position is designed to support the UN's commitment to resolving workplace conflicts through informal means, thereby promoting a culture of dialogue and understanding among staff members.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Consultant for Conflict Resolution will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: providing alternative dispute resolution services to UN employees; conducting mediation sessions to help parties resolve workplace conflicts in a voluntary and confidential manner; maintaining neutrality and confidentiality while gathering relevant information; assisting in outreach initiatives to raise awareness about informal conflict resolution services; conducting skill-building activities to enhance conflict competence among staff; offering expert advice on dispute resolution techniques; developing relationships with visitors to advise them on available services; and following up with visitors to gather feedback and provide information on further services as needed. The consultant will work closely with the Ombudsman and other stakeholders to ensure effective resolution of conflicts and to promote a positive work environment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in conflict resolution, law, social sciences, or a related field. Alternatively, a first university degree combined with relevant qualifications and experience may be accepted. Additionally, a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in dispute resolution, managerial, or legal roles is required. Experience in providing informal conflict resolution services within a workplace setting is essential, and experience in an international organizational context is highly desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in fields such as conflict resolution, law, social sciences, or related disciplines. In cases where candidates possess a first university degree, they must also demonstrate a relevant combination of qualifications and experience that compensates for the lack of an advanced degree.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in areas related to dispute resolution, management, or legal services. Candidates should have a proven track record of providing informal conflict resolution services in workplace environments, demonstrating their ability to handle sensitive situations effectively.
