Job Overview:
The Translator (English) position is integral to the Strategy, Engagement and Institutional Relations (SEIR) Unit within EUROCONTROL. This role involves translating a variety of documents, including administrative, legal, financial, and technical texts from French and other languages into English. The selected candidate will be responsible for ensuring that translations are clear, accurate, and accessible to a wide audience, often simplifying complex documents drafted by non-native English speakers. The role also includes proofreading and revising translations from colleagues and external providers, maintaining multilingual databases, and contributing to the optimization of workflows and the use of AI tools in the Language Service. The position requires a proactive approach to managing translation requests and deadlines, as well as providing linguistic advice to stakeholders. The successful candidate will work in a hybrid model, balancing onsite presence with remote work opportunities, while adhering to the organization's policies and business needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Process requests for proofreading and translation into English using the Language Service's translation management tool, confirming formatting requirements and deadlines, and seeking clarification where necessary to ensure timely delivery.
  • Translate administrative, legal, financial, and technical documents drafted in French or other languages of the Organisation’s Member States into English, ensuring that the translations meet the missions of the EUROCONTROL Organisation.
  • Simplify and proofread complex documents to ensure clarity, accuracy, and accessibility for a wide audience.
  • Revise translations provided by fellow team members and external providers to maintain high-quality standards.
  • Assist translators from other language teams in understanding complex texts written in English.
  • Maintain multilingual databases and glossaries to ensure consistency and accuracy in translations.
  • Actively contribute to optimizing workflows and the use of AI tools and technology in the Language Service.
  • Provide linguistic advice and liaise with stakeholders to ensure effective communication.
  • Administer language testing in English for new recruits, as required. 1
  • Carry out any other tasks in line with the main purpose of the job as assigned by management.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must fulfill one of the following requirements: Completion of third-level studies in a relevant domain (e.g., translation or modern languages) meeting EQF Level 7 followed by at least 3 years of relevant professional experience, or Completion of third-level studies in a relevant domain (e.g., translation or modern languages), meeting EQF Level 6 followed by at least 4 years of relevant professional experience. Additionally, candidates should have experience and proficiency in the use of CAT tools, particularly Trados Studio, and experience with machine translation and AI tools. Proficiency in standard office applications and internet-based search tools is also required. Candidates should demonstrate analytical thinking, customer focus, results focus, quality focus, and planning and organizing skills. The ability to work in a multinational and multicultural environment is essential, along with professional conduct in line with the corporate behaviors of the Agency.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed third-level studies in a relevant domain such as translation or modern languages. The educational qualifications must meet the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) Level 6 or 7, depending on the years of professional experience. Internal candidates can check the intranet for equivalencies regarding in-house experience and educational qualifications.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have at least 3 years of relevant professional experience if they hold a degree meeting EQF Level 7, or at least 4 years of relevant professional experience if they hold a degree meeting EQF Level
  • Experience in using CAT tools and familiarity with machine translation and AI tools is highly desirable, as is experience in a professional translation environment.

Languages:
Candidates must have a perfect command of English (C2 level – mother tongue or equivalent) and be proficient in French at level C
  • Proficiency in other European languages, particularly German or Dutch, would be considered a significant asset. The language proficiency levels are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Additional Notes:
The position is open to nationals of EUROCONTROL Member States only. The selected candidate may need to provide documentary evidence confirming they meet the minimum education requirements. The appointment is for a duration of 5 years, with the possibility of renewal or conversion under certain conditions. The selected candidate must complete a probationary period of nine months before being established in the post. The role operates under a hybrid working model, combining onsite presence with remote work opportunities, although full-time remote work is not permitted. Candidates who are not selected will be placed on a reserve list for similar roles, valid for one year from the closing date of applications.
