Job Overview:
The Communications Division of Human Rights Watch is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic university student or recent graduate to join as a full-time intern in the Brussels office. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in media and communication projects related to human rights issues. The intern will be involved in various tasks, including media monitoring for European countries, creating engaging social media content, liaising with the press, and organizing meetings and events. The position is designed to provide interns with a comprehensive understanding of the workings of an international human rights organization, and it includes close supervision by HRW staff, as well as opportunities for professional development through virtual lectures, workshops, and networking with other interns and professionals in the field.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for contributing to various media and communication projects, which may include:
  • Assisting in media monitoring and analysis of news coverage related to human rights issues in European countries.
  • Creating and curating content for HRW's social media platforms to enhance engagement and outreach.
  • Liaising with journalists and media outlets to promote HRW's work and initiatives.
  • Organizing and coordinating meetings, events, and workshops related to human rights advocacy.
  • Participating in team meetings and contributing ideas for communication strategies.
  • Supporting the development of promotional materials and press releases.
  • Engaging in research and analysis to support HRW's communication efforts.
  • Attending training sessions and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge in the field of human rights and communications.

Required Qualifications:
Eligible applicants must be university students or recent graduates who are well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable. A strong interest in international human rights, news media, and social media is essential. Candidates should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and French, as these are mandatory for the role. Additionally, familiarity with other European languages such as Flemish, Swedish, or Danish is considered a valuable asset. Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office and internet applications, is required. Applicants must also have valid work authorization in Belgium for the duration of the internship.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be enrolled in a university or other academic institution during the internship term or have recently graduated from an academic program. The internship is intended for those seeking further training and experience in the field of communications and human rights.

Experience:
While prior experience in communications or human rights is not explicitly required, any relevant experience, such as internships, volunteer work, or academic projects related to media, communications, or human rights advocacy, will be beneficial. Interns who are currently enrolled students must provide proof of external funding and will be reimbursed for lunch and local travel costs as pre-approved by HRW. Recent graduates will receive a gross stipend of EUR 1095 per month. Students are encouraged to check with their academic institutions regarding the possibility of obtaining academic credit for the internship.
