Job Posting Organization: The UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict Network (UN Action) was established in 2007 in response to the 'Call to Action' from the June 2006 Symposium on Sexual Violence in Conflict and Beyond held in Brussels, Belgium. It is a unique initiative that brings together the collective experience and institutional capacity of the UN system through its 27 member entities. UN Action leads advocacy, knowledge-building, resource mobilization, and joint programming to prevent and respond to conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV). The initiative is housed in the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict and is recognized as a critical interagency coordination forum to address CRSV, as highlighted in various UN security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Council resolutions. UN Action aims to elevate sexual violence as a significant peace and security challenge and as a humanitarian, human rights, gender, and development issue, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
Job Overview: The UN CRSV Coordinator will be responsible for developing a strategic, analytical mapping that provides an overview of current CRSV responses, consolidating information from UN entities and partners, and identifying gaps, complementarities, opportunities, and constraints across key thematic areas. This role is crucial for guiding system-level coordination, informing strategic decision-making, and supporting Syrian-led CRSV prevention and response efforts. The Coordinator will engage in regional coordination and direct engagement where feasible, while also utilizing remote modalities as necessary. The position requires close collaboration with UN Country Teams (UNCTs), clusters, UN Action member entities, and relevant partners to ensure coherence and complementarity in efforts to address CRSV in Syria. The Coordinator will also provide tailored advice to UN Senior Officials in-country and support the integration of gender and CRSV considerations into planning and decision-making processes.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties of the UN CRSV Coordinator include:
Coordinating the efforts of UN entities addressing CRSV in Syria, providing strategic advice and technical guidance to strengthen national capacities on CRSV prevention and response.
Supporting Syrian-led initiatives to meet the needs of survivors of CRSV by facilitating coordination between UN entities and women-led organizations.
Establishing a systematic inter-agency approach to gender and CRSV, providing strategic guidance and fostering partnerships.
Conducting strategic analysis of multi-sectoral mitigation strategies for gender-based and CRSV protection risks.
Creating a shared understanding of the CRSV landscape in Syria by consolidating inputs from various stakeholders.
Strengthening governance on CRSV through communication and facilitation of UN support to Syrian-led efforts.
Promoting system-wide learning and knowledge management by disseminating good practices and supporting peer-to-peer learning.
Documenting lessons learned and contributing to UN Action’s knowledge base.
Supporting UN Senior Officials in mobilizing political attention and financial support for Syrian-led efforts related to CRSV.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in human rights, gender studies, international relations, law, or a related field. A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience is required, including at least 2 years of relevant experience in conflict, crisis, or post-conflict settings. Demonstrated experience in facilitating inter-agency coordination and planning processes related to CRSV, GBV, protection, and/or peacebuilding is essential. Candidates should also have experience advising senior UN leadership on issues related to Women, Peace and Security (WPS), gender, or conflict prevention and resolution. Knowledge of CRSV frameworks and survivor-centered protection approaches is required, along with experience implementing Security Council resolutions on CRSV, GBV, or WPS.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in human rights, gender studies, international relations, law, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background is essential to understand the complexities of CRSV and to effectively engage with various stakeholders in the field.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 7 years of progressively responsible experience, including a minimum of 2 years in conflict, crisis, or post-conflict settings.
