Job Overview: The internship is situated within the Meetings Servicing Unit of the Meetings Support Section, part of the Meetings and Publishing Division (MPD) of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM). This role provides a unique opportunity for interns to gain practical experience in conference services, meeting operations, and digital solutions that support the intergovernmental processes of the United Nations. Interns will work closely with the Chief of Unit and contribute to various operational projects across five key workstreams, enhancing their understanding of the UN's meeting and documentation services.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be involved in several critical areas:
Intergovernmental Meeting Services: Assisting in the logistical and operational workflows for high-level meetings at UN Headquarters, including in-person, virtual, and hybrid formats.
Digital Meetings Services Solutions & Paperless Initiatives: Supporting the implementation of digital services and sustainable meeting practices through electronic documentation distribution.
Operations Analytics & Reporting: Engaging in data collection and performance analysis to evaluate service delivery and optimize resource allocation.
Accessibility & Inclusion Support: Collaborating with the UN Accessibility Centre to foster inclusive meeting environments for participants with disabilities.
Knowledge Management & Process Improvement: Aiding in the standardization of operations by creating and maintaining operational guidelines and training materials.
Additional duties as assigned by the supervisor, contributing to a comprehensive learning experience.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must be currently enrolled in or have completed a graduate program (second university degree or equivalent) or be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level). No prior work experience is necessary, but relevant training, education, or skills that would benefit the UN during the internship are encouraged. Strong organizational and communication skills are essential, along with a proactive approach to learning and contributing to the team.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess a degree or be in the process of obtaining a degree in a relevant field such as international relations, public administration, business administration, or a related discipline. The educational background should ideally align with the functions of the internship, providing a solid foundation for understanding the UN's operations and objectives.
Experience: While no specific work experience is required, any prior internships, volunteer work, or academic projects related to international relations, conference management, or administrative support will be considered advantageous. The internship is designed for individuals seeking to gain practical experience and insights into the workings of the United Nations and its conference services.
Languages: Fluency in English (oral and written) is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as French, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's application.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 35 hours per week, taking place on the UN premises in New York. The expected duration of the internship is three months, with a potential for extension. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Non-U.S. citizens may need to obtain a G-4 visa to participate in the internship.
