Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the NATO Staff Officer - Russia Strategic Analyst include:
  • Developing threat-informed analyses on Russia's future strategies and military capabilities.
  • Conducting long-term environmental studies to support NATO's shaping strategy and transformational efforts regarding Russia.
  • Applying various analytical techniques to derive research requirements and develop actionable insights.
  • Leading and contributing to LTMSS-related war games, workshops, and high-level engagements.
  • Initiating and drafting strategic documents and proposals for the chain of command.
  • Interacting with and briefing senior leadership on findings and results.
  • Coordinating with NATO entities and nations on military strategic shaping related to Russia.
  • Providing input for papers, presentations, and guidance on NATO strategy and policy concerning Russia.
  • Collaborating with analysts within NATO and academia to enhance strategic understanding of Russia.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for this position include:
  • A University Degree in history, geography, politics, economics, operations research, or a related discipline, along with 2 years of relevant experience; or Higher Secondary education with advanced vocational training leading to a professional qualification and 4 years of related experience.
  • At least 3 years of demonstrable experience in analyzing and researching Russia's strategic culture and military capabilities.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in developing policy or strategy on Russia for a national government or international organization.
  • Previous experience working within NATO or other defense-related organizations on foreign/security/defense affairs.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with strong briefing skills.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a University Degree in a relevant field such as history, geography, politics, economics, or operations research. Alternatively, candidates with Higher Secondary education and advanced vocational training leading to a professional qualification are also eligible, provided they have the requisite experience. Advanced degrees such as a Master's or PhD focused on Russia or related fields are highly desirable and may enhance a candidate's application.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in analyzing and researching Russia, including its strategic culture and military doctrine. Additionally, candidates should have at least 2 years of experience in developing policy or strategy related to Russia for a national government or international organization. Experience working within NATO or similar defense-related entities is also essential, as it provides valuable insights into the operational and strategic frameworks relevant to the role.

Languages:
The mandatory language requirement for this position is English, with a proficiency level of SLP 3333 (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing). Desirable qualifications include advanced English proficiency (SLP 3334) and Russian language skills, particularly in listening and reading, which would be beneficial for the role.

Additional Notes:
This position is linked to a specific NATO project and is for a limited duration of three years. Serving NATO International Civilian staff will be offered a contract in accordance with NATO Civilian Personnel Regulations, while newly recruited staff will receive a three-year definite duration contract.
