Job Overview: The Associate Programme Officer position is situated within the Rule of Law Unit of the EOSG. The role involves providing critical information, analysis, and policy advice to senior leadership on various thematic areas related to the rule of law and human rights. The Associate Programme Officer will assist in quality control of documents, contribute to decision-making forums, support the implementation of the Secretary-General's initiatives, and prepare various written outputs. The position requires a proactive approach to policy development and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively while ensuring high-quality outputs.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Associate Programme Officer will be responsible for a range of duties, including: assisting with the provision of information and analysis on thematic areas; ensuring quality control of documents produced by the EOSG; contributing to key decision-making forums; supporting the implementation of the Secretary-General's agenda on rule of law and human rights; assisting in policy development and analysis; preparing written outputs such as meeting notes and speeches; providing support for high-level meetings and conferences; managing records, including the declassification of confidential records; and performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of theories and concepts relevant to rule of law and human rights. They should demonstrate the ability to identify and analyze issues, conduct independent research, and manage conflicting priorities. Professionalism, effective communication skills, teamwork, and accountability are essential competencies for this role. Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law is required for this position. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of rule of law and human rights issues.
Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in rule of law and human rights-related programs is required. Candidates should have experience supporting senior officials, coordinating high-level mechanisms, and working with civil society. Experience in records management, particularly with the declassification of confidential records, is also necessary. Familiarity with the United Nations or other international organizations, especially in policy development and system-wide initiatives, is desirable.
Languages: English is the required working language for this position, with a minimum proficiency level of UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the United Nations, and proficiency in French may be considered an asset, although it is not mandatory for this role.
