Job Overview:
The Communications Analyst position is crucial for the UNFPA Country Office in Juba, South Sudan, where the incumbent will work closely with the Partnerships, Communications, and Resource Mobilization team. The role involves translating and contributing to the delivery of the Country Office's program targets related to communications and partnerships development. The Communications Analyst will be responsible for internal and external advocacy, communication, and external relations for UNFPA, generating relevant materials to showcase the Country Office's work in various forums, including the UN Communications Group. The position requires a proactive approach to establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with government counterparts, development partners, civil society organizations, and the media. The analyst will monitor and analyze media communication trends related to the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and advise the representative on these matters. This role is pivotal in ensuring that UNFPA's mandate is visible and that the organization effectively communicates its contributions to the UN's coherent image and programming in South Sudan.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Communications Analyst will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Contributing to the development of a comprehensive communication strategy for UNFPA South Sudan, ensuring alignment with global priorities.
  • Implementing the communication strategy to enhance visibility of UNFPA's mandate and its contributions to national development.
  • Producing and disseminating communication and advocacy materials such as brochures, posters, and press releases.
  • Organizing advocacy events to raise awareness on UNFPA's issues through innovative approaches.
  • Building and maintaining strong media networks, ensuring regular media events and timely dissemination of media statements.
  • Scanning UNFPA-produced research and internal information to optimize communication materials for advocacy and capacity building.
  • Coordinating participation in global, regional, and national media events linked to UNFPA's mandate.
  • Developing a resource base for communications, including annual reports and bulletins.
  • Editing reports and proposals to ensure quality and sensitivity to political and cultural contexts. 1
  • Supporting the UNFPA Humanitarian team in emergency settings and ensuring coordinated responses. 1
  • Carrying out additional duties as required by UNFPA leadership.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in social sciences, journalism, communications, or related fields. Professional membership in a journalism or media communications association is desirable. The role requires at least three years of progressively responsible experience in public relations and communications, with experience working with the Ministry of Health and Local Governments being an advantage. Strong knowledge of media and public relations, excellent advocacy skills, and proficiency in oral and written English are essential. A thorough understanding of the UN system, particularly UNFPA's mandate and current development topics in South Sudan, is highly beneficial. Familiarity with communication strategies in post-crisis situations and experience in sexual and reproductive health are preferred. Candidates should also demonstrate excellent computer skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master's Degree in social sciences, journalism, communications, or other related fields. Additionally, professional membership in a relevant journalism or media communications association is considered desirable, indicating a commitment to the field and ongoing professional development.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of increasingly responsible experience in public relations and communications. Experience working with governmental health ministries and local governments is desirable, as it provides insight into the operational context of UNFPA's work. Candidates should have a strong understanding of media relations and advocacy, as well as experience in developing and implementing communication strategies that align with organizational goals.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of Arabic is considered an added advantage, as it may facilitate communication within the local context. Additionally, working knowledge of another UN official language is seen as an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
