Job Overview:
The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator plays a crucial role in the IAEA's Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, specifically within the Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC). This position involves developing and implementing policies and strategies to enhance Member States' preparedness for nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies. The coordinator is responsible for managing and coordinating activities related to the IAEA's emergency preparedness program, ensuring that all components are effectively developed and implemented. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of emergency management, nuclear safety standards, and the ability to provide technical support and guidance to Member States. The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator must also participate in the IAEA's Incident and Emergency System (IES) as an Emergency Response Manager, contributing to the organization's overall mission of safeguarding public health and safety in the context of nuclear energy.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator will be tasked with planning, directing, coordinating, and monitoring the implementation of activities aimed at strengthening Member States' preparedness for nuclear and radiological incidents. This includes ensuring compliance with IAEA Safety Standards and conducting Emergency Preparedness Reviews (EPREVs). The coordinator will manage the development and maintenance of Safety Standards, technical guidelines, and tools relevant to emergency preparedness, incorporating feedback from actual emergencies and exercises. Additionally, the role involves providing expert technical knowledge and guidance to Member States, overseeing technical support for cooperation projects, and maintaining agreements with international organizations. The coordinator will also serve as an on-call Emergency Response Manager, participating in training and exercises, and providing technical support when the IEC is activated.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, radiation protection, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in these fields combined with two years of relevant work experience may be considered. A doctorate in a related field is an asset. The position requires a minimum of 10 years of experience in preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents, with at least five years at a managerial level and three years at an international level. Experience in developing national response plans and emergency preparedness arrangements is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate proven knowledge in emergency management, planning, and radiation protection.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, radiation protection, or a related field. A first-level university degree in these areas, combined with relevant work experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A doctorate in a related field is considered advantageous and may enhance a candidate's application.

Experience:
The position requires a substantial level of experience, specifically a minimum of 10 years in the field of emergency preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents. This experience should include at least five years in a managerial capacity and three years at an international level, focusing on the development of Safety Standards and technical guidelines. Candidates should also have experience in formulating national emergency preparedness and response plans, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in managing nuclear safety and security.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's qualifications.

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $103,165, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance.
