Job Overview:
As a Senior Investment Associate at IDB Invest, you will play a crucial role in supporting the organization’s mission to finance and structure investments that promote sustainable development in the region. Your primary responsibilities will include developing and maintaining quality client relationships, particularly in Guatemala, to enhance business opportunities. You will be expected to demonstrate a thorough understanding of finance and financial services, especially in corporate and project financing. The position requires you to review and analyze financial statements, build and adjust financial models, and assess potential investment opportunities based on various criteria such as market potential and strategic fit. You will also participate in negotiations and coordinate transactions, ensuring compliance with IDB Invest standards. Your contributions will be vital in aligning business development with strategic priorities and enhancing regional coordination.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Investment Associate will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
  • Demonstrating a thorough understanding of finance and financial services, particularly in corporate and project financing.
  • Supporting regional team leaders in developing and maintaining quality client relationships to ensure responsive service and improve new business opportunities, especially in Guatemala.
  • Reviewing and analyzing financial statements and building or adjusting Excel financial models to evaluate financial information and support management decision-making.
  • Proactively identifying potential investment opportunities based on industry experience, reputation, market potential, financial capability, and strategic fit.
  • Assessing the attractiveness of specific investment opportunities with a focus on credit quality and development impact, including creating financial models and conducting industry and market research.
  • Participating in negotiations and using negotiation skills to overcome impasses and lead negotiations in straightforward transactions.
  • Coordinating complete transactions, including in-person due diligence, and developing appropriate financial structures for both straightforward and sophisticated transactions.
  • Working closely with IDB Invest’s development partners to manage various risks in projects and champion IDB Invest’s offerings to clients.
  • Preparing documentation for internal processes and contributing to the preparation and review of legal transaction documents. 1
  • Assisting with disbursements for approved lending and investment transactions by verifying all contractual conditions. 1
  • Assisting in the preparation of PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets, pitchbooks, and other business-related reports.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the Senior Investment Associate position, candidates must possess an advanced degree (Masters, MBA, or equivalent) in economics, legal, finance, business administration, engineering, or another relevant field. Additionally, candidates should have at least three years of relevant professional experience in loan and investment origination, structuring structured finance (project finance), or corporate finance transactions. Experience in a similar role within an investment, advisory firm, or development bank is highly desirable. Strong client relationship experience and skills are also highly valued, as the role requires effective communication and engagement with various stakeholders.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold an advanced degree, such as a Master's degree or MBA, in a relevant field such as economics, finance, business administration, engineering, or law. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate possesses the necessary theoretical knowledge and analytical skills required for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in areas such as loan and investment origination, structured finance, or corporate finance transactions. Candidates with confirmed experience in a similar role within an investment, advisory firm, or development bank will be preferred. Strong client relationship management skills are also crucial for success in this role.

Languages:
Candidates must have oral and written professional proficiency in both English and Spanish. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication with clients and stakeholders in the region. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not mandatory.

Additional Notes:
The position is offered as a national staff contract for an initial duration of 36 months, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement. Candidates must be eligible to work in Guatemala without the need for sponsorship. Furthermore, candidates should not have any family members working at IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouses.
