Job Overview: This internship is situated within the Management Unit of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Sub-Fund, part of the Capacity DevelopmentProgramme Management Office (CDPMO) at the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations. The primary focus of this role is to support the administration, coordination, and oversight of projects funded under the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund (UNPDF), aimed at enhancing national capacities for sustainable development. Interns will work closely with the Programme Management Officer and Senior Programme Management Officer, gaining valuable insights into the workings of the United Nations while contributing to meaningful projects that advance sustainable development goals. This part-time, unpaid internship lasts for four months and provides interns with the opportunity to engage in various aspects of project management and coordination, research, and administrative support.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a range of tasks under the guidance of professional staff in the Management Unit. Key responsibilities include:
Planning and Coordination Support: Assisting in the development, review, and preparation of project proposals related to sustainable development; organizing meetings for the Management Unit, which involves preparing background documentation, consolidating information from implementing entities, and documenting meeting records; tracking follow-up actions concerning project review, implementation, and reporting; and providing additional coordination support as needed.
Research Support: Conducting research to gather background information and materials for the Management Unit, including data collection and analysis; assisting in the preparation of briefing notes, summaries, presentations, and other informational materials related to the Sub-Fund's work; and offering further research assistance as required.
Operations and Administrative Support: Supporting the daily management and activities of the Management Unit, which includes organizing documentation, filing, and managing information; preparing and updating visibility and informational materials for the 2030 Agenda Sub-Fund, such as web pages, project summaries, and brochures; and performing other ad-hoc duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required for the UN Internship Programme, candidates should have a field of study closely related to the internship they are applying for. Additionally, applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s, or Ph.D. Program, or have completed such programs. Proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams, is essential, and knowledge of MS Copilot, prompt engineering, and AI is considered desirable. The ability to draft news articles is also advantageous.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a relevant educational background that aligns with the internship's focus on sustainable development. This includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate program or being in the final year of a bachelor's degree program. Proof of enrollment or completion will be required during the application process, and candidates must be prepared to provide an official certificate at a later stage.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that pertains to sustainable development, project management, or related fields. This internship is designed for students or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in an international organization and contribute to meaningful projects.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
