Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UN Women was established in July 2010 as part of the UN reform agenda to enhance gender equality and the empowerment of women. The organization merges the resources and mandates of four previously distinct parts of the UN system that focused on gender equality and women's empowerment. UN Women operates globally, working with governments and partners to eliminate discrimination against women and girls, empower women, and achieve equality between women and men. The organization is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment and has a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with its aims and objectives.

Job Overview:
The position of International Consultant is focused on supporting the development of a policy brief on migrant women and disability under the Making Migration Safe for Women programme. This role involves examining the experiences of migrant women with disabilities, including both positive and negative aspects of migration. The consultant will analyze how migration can enhance agency, autonomy, and empowerment for these women while also addressing the challenges they face, such as discrimination, violence, and barriers to essential services. The consultant will conduct background research, organize a virtual consultation with stakeholders, and prepare a comprehensive policy brief that reflects the lived experiences of migrant women with disabilities. This position requires strong research and writing skills, as well as the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders to inform policy recommendations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct background research and develop an outline and timeline for the policy brief.
  • Organize and facilitate a virtual consultation on migrant women and disabilities, including preparation of the terms of reference, agenda, and guiding questions.
  • Prepare a summary note of the virtual consultation, highlighting key issues and recommendations for the policy brief.
  • Identify key stakeholders and conduct interviews (5-8 interviews) to gather insights.
  • Prepare the first draft of the policy brief for review and feedback, incorporating two rounds of revisions.
  • Finalize the policy brief based on feedback received.
  • Prepare key findings and messages from the final policy paper to support UN Women’s communications and advocacy efforts.
  • Create a plain language summary of the policy paper, ensuring accessibility for various audiences.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in gender/women's studies, development studies, social policy, or human rights.
  • A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
  • At least five years of experience in research related to gender equality, women’s rights, and migration, with a focus on disability rights or inclusion.
  • Proven experience in producing policy-oriented research, briefs, papers, or knowledge products.
  • Familiarity with international policy frameworks related to gender equality, migration, and disability rights.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to work collaboratively under tight deadlines.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as gender/women's studies, development studies, social policy, or human rights. Alternatively, a first-level university degree along with two additional years of qualifying experience may be considered equivalent to the advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires at least five years of relevant experience in conducting or supporting research focused on gender equality, women’s rights, and migration, particularly with a demonstrated background in disability rights or disability inclusion. Candidates should have experience in producing policy-oriented research and familiarity with international policy frameworks.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of any other UN official language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's profile for this consultancy role.

Additional Notes:
This consultancy is home-based, allowing for flexibility in work arrangements. The consultant will be expected to adhere to UN Women’s values and competencies, including integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity. The role involves engaging with various stakeholders and requires strong communication and organizational skills. The payment schedule is based on the completion of specific deliverables, with percentages allocated to each task. The consultant will report to the Global Coordinator of the Making Migration Safe for Women programme.
