Job Overview: The Entomologist (Human Disease Vectors) will work under the supervision of the Medical Entomologist to formulate and implement research and development activities related to the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) package for human disease vectors. This role involves contributing to the development of SIT through research activities at the Insect Pest Control Laboratory and Coordinated Research Projects. The position also entails providing technical guidance to the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme, assisting in the transfer and validation of SIT technologies to Member States, and contributing to the development of protocols, manuals, and guidelines. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in innovative research and development approaches to enhance the effectiveness of SIT in controlling human disease vectors.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Entomologist will be responsible for developing, adapting, and validating technologies related to the control of human disease vectors (HDVs) within the framework of area-wide integrated pest management programs. This includes providing recommendations for the transfer and implementation of these technologies to Member States. The role requires coordination and implementation of national, regional, and interregional projects under the IAEA technical cooperation programme. The Entomologist will also promote, coordinate, and evaluate Coordinated Research Projects (CRPs) related to SIT for HDVs, provide technical support to visiting scientists and collaborators, and contribute to the development of various documentation including manuals and guidelines. Additionally, the role involves input on annual reports and newsletters, ensuring that all activities align with the objectives of the IAEA and FAO.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor's Degree in medical entomology or related biological sciences, with an advanced university degree being an asset. A minimum of 5 years of working experience in research and development related to the SIT for human disease vectors or other related pests is required. Experience in an international setting, particularly in transferring SIT technologies in developing countries, is highly desirable. Candidates should have thorough technical knowledge of HDVs, including mass-rearing techniques, insect quality control management, and radiation protocols. Familiarity with the principles of SIT and integrated pest management approaches is essential, along with an understanding of relevant FAO and IAEA mechanisms and procedures.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's Degree in medical entomology or a closely related field. An advanced degree is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's qualifications for the role.
Experience: The position requires at least 5 years of relevant working experience, particularly in research and development related to the SIT for human disease vectors. Experience in an international context, especially practical field experience in technology transfer related to SIT in developing countries, is strongly preferred. Candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of the biology of HDVs and the application of SIT principles.
Languages: Excellent oral and written command of English is mandatory. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's profile.
